Chapter one- POV Firefly

I gazed into a mirror, shifting my scales as I decided what color to be on the first day of school at jade mountain academy.

I finally decided on a violet-purple that faded to black around my talons and tail, with speckles of lemon-yellow. I turned and lifted one of my wings to gaze at my wing membranes and RainWing ruff. Both were some of the only obvious signs I was half NightWing; they were permanently black with white and silver star-speckles.

Of course, there were other things too, my eyes were a slightly different shade of green than most RainWings', my tail, while still prehensile, wasn't nearly as flexible as a RainWing's, and I had no poisonous fangs that shot deadly erosive acid, instead I could breath a weak fire, but those weren't as obvious, and you wouldn't notice unless you looked really close. Or we were fighting, but the latter was unlikely.

I walked out of the treehouse, which was the largest in the rainforest kingdom, but still small for a palace. I was fine with this though. It was just my mother, Queen Glory, my father, Deathbringer, my uncle, Jambu, Kinkajou, Moonwatcher, Moonwatcher's mother, Secretkeeper, and their dragonets that lived here, which was smaller than the population of most palaces. I grabbed a banana from a nearby tree and began to unpeel and eat it while laying in a spot where the rising sun could hit my scales. "Hello." A small voice said.

I almost felt my scales turn yellow and pale green, but before the colors came out I calmed down and focused on keeping them purple, black and yellow. I looked around for the source of the voice, and when I saw nothing I thought it was another RainWing camouflaged, but then my eyes picked up a slightly abnormal shape in the tree where I got the banana, it was a small LeafWing dragonet. "I didn't know dragonets your age came over to Pyrrhia." I said.

"Not usually. But the trees are still in the process of growing again in Pantala, and my parents wanted to raise me here, where there were lots of healthy trees." She said.

"I'm Fern. I assume you're Princess Firefly?" Fern asked. I nodded. "Oh, I must've slept in later than I thought! Panther already left!" I said with a gasp as I saw how high the sun was in the sky. "I'm sorry, Fern, but I really do have to be going if I don't want to be late to jade mountain academy!" I said, standing up and stretching my wings before finishing the banana and tossing the peel down to the forest floor.

She nodded and I flew up into the air, my wings pumping to make up for lost time. While I flew, I gazed at my skyfire bracelet. It would certainly help me from getting headaches, but also make it harder to know which dragons were truly friendly. I touched the teardrop scales by my eyes, permanent signs that I was a mindreader.
