Lonely

Toothless nuzzled lightly into Hiccup's back as he followed his human out the door. His green-yellow eyes were bright with excitement. The day would be a perfect one for flying. The skies were dark, the fog was thick on the ground, but the rain hadn't started yet. A gentle, cooing, purr slipped from his throat as his head slid up Hiccup's back and over his shoulder.

"Whoa buddy." Hiccup turned and lightly placed his hands on his dragons head. "You gotta stay here for the day. Astrid and I are going out." He explained, fingers scratching lightly at Toothless' ears. "Maybe we'll go out later, if the rain doesn't get too bad." He offered, giving his friend an apologetic look.

Toothless merely shook his head and pushed closer to Hiccup, eyes large and innocent. He was giving the boy the puppy dog face, hoping he wouldn't be able to resist. The beast lowered his head to the ground, tail swaying in the air. His stance was playful, expectant.

"No. I'm sorry, but I promised her." Hiccup bent to rub Toothless' face once more, eyes sad. "I'll try to get back before the rain starts, okay? Then we'll go out and have some fun. Just the two of us."

Toothless' eyes narrowed and a deep hissing growl escaped his throat. 'Just the two of us,' usually meant that Astrid would come along for the ride. Toothless didn't mind the girl, he just really wanted his alone time with Hiccup. They had been hanging out together less and less, and the dragon couldn't help but feel unwanted.

Is that it? He asked inside his head, eyes losing their hard edge, replacing the look with a sad one. You don't want me anymore? You have her and her Nadder. No need for me. He mused.

"What're you thinking about buddy?" Hiccup kept his voice soft as he reached for Toothless' snout. The dragon reared away from him, eyes bright with hurt and longing. Seeing that his friend wasn't going to give in anytime soon, Hiccup shook his head. "I really have to go." He turned and hobbled off into the fog, disappearing before long.

A downed dragon is a dead dragon, and without you, I can't fly, Toothless told Hiccups retreating form. He stretched his eager wings and looked up at the sky. Giving a pain filled roar, he made his way back to the house. He settled his massive body beside Hiccup's bed, placing his head on his folded front feet.

He knew that Hiccup would be back eventually, and that he'd make up for leaving him again. Toothless also knew that he'd wait forever, if it meant Hiccup would look at him.

Nuzzling his head into his paws he closed his eyes, trying to sleep. It's not easy being a dragon in love with your rider. No...not easy at all.
