"Mommy!" The little girl exclaimed as everything around her went dark.
Brennan walked over to where Christine was sitting at her little play table.
"It's OK, Christine. The power has just gone out."
She scooped up the 4 year old into her arms.
"We should get some light in here so it's not so dark, shouldn't we?"
Christine nodded as Brennan set her down and took her hand.
"Let's go find some candles and flashlights, OK?"
Brennan and Christine made their way to the storage closet where Brennan found candles and a flashlight on the top shelf. She handed the flashlight to her daughter and took the candles to the kitchen then sat her daughter on the counter next to her. Christine watched as her mother struck the match and lit the candles.
"I wanna do it too mommy"
Brennan laughed, "not until you're older. It's a little bit dangerous."
Brennan lifted her daughter down from the counter just as the front door opened and Booth ran in, closing the door behind him quickly.
"It is pouring out there! Geez"
Christine rushed to her father. "Daddy the lights are gone!"
"I can see that" Booth said as he picked up his daughter and planted a kiss on her cheek.
Brennan walked over to Booth and gave her husband a kiss, "Hi"
"I really didn't think the outage would reach all the way here. It went out at work across town just as I was leaving."
Brennan replied, "The storm must be moving towards us. Our power just went out a few minutes before you got here."
Booth made his way to the couch and fell into the plush cushion, letting out a long sigh, "Well either way, I'm glad to be home. I had a looong day at work, let me tell you."
"Yes I noticed. You are home quite a bit later than you usually are." Brennan made her way back into the kitchen to light more candles. "Are you hungry, Booth? Christine and I already ate, but there are some leftovers and I can heat them up for you."
"Thanks Bones, but I think I'll just enjoy sitting for a while."
Christine came bounding back into the room giggling with her flashlight waving light all over and plopped down in her daddy's lap.
"Daddy want to see what I made in preschool today?" the little girl whispered.
Booth leaned in to see what his daughter was holding in her closed hand. She opened it to reveal a small rock which was painted green and yellow.
Booth smiled, "Very nice Christine. Was it a craft you did?"
"No," the little girl continued, still whispering, "I finished the painting craft too fast so I painted the rock I found at recess"
Booth let out a chuckle, but was quickly hushed by the 4 year old in his lap.
"Christine, why are we being quiet?"
"Because my rock is a surprise for mommy"
Booth looked up at Brennan who was smiling at them from the kitchen. She could hear the whole conversation between the two, and loved seeing them be silly together. She walked over to the living room and sat next to her husband and daughter.
Christine moved her way between her mom and dad on the couch. "Mommy I have a surprise for you. Close your eyes."
Brennan closed her eyes and felt the small gift being placed in her hands.
"Now open!"
Brennan opened her eyes and looked at the stone. "Wow Christine. Did you make this by yourself? It's very pretty."
A huge grin spread across Christine's face as looked away from her mother, shyly. Then yawned.
Booth stood up, "I think It's getting to be about bedtime, huh, Christine."
"No I'm not sleepy!" the little girl protested as her dad lifted her into his arms. She quickly resigned after being promised a story and rested her head on Booth's shoulder as he carried her upstairs to bed.
