AN: Ok, I have seen Children of Earth and tbh, I hate them for killing Ianto. But, because I was in a saaad mood, I wrote another death for him! Woo!

The gunshot almost deafened Jack as it echoed through the open coms line, right into his ear. His eyes widened.
"..No.." His voice was little more than a whisper. He pressed the button on his ear piece, frozen to the spot.

"Ianto?! Yan?! Are you there?!"

There was silence. And then Jack heard the worst sound he could have heard. The rattling gasp of Ianto's breath.
"..Jack.."

It had started out as what seemed like a normal, everyday mission.
Jack and Gwen had gone to check out some unusual rift activity around the docks area whilst Ianto manned the Hub. It was how they managed now, with only the three of them.
Little did any of them know, this was never going to be an ordinary day. For at least two of them, it was to be the worst day of their lives...

"Ianto! Are you okay?"

Jack was already running back to the SUV. He had to get back. He had to.

"I... Oh Jesus..."

That awful rattling gargle filtered through to Jacks ears. It made him cold inside.

"Ianto, please hang on.. Please Yan, I.. I'll be there soon, I promise!"

He leapt into the drivers seat and slammed the SUV into gear, screeching away from the kerb.

Ianto had been scared before. He was scared at Canary Wharf. Scared when Lisa turned on them all. Scared when he was nearly bled like a calf. And yet, now, when he knew he should be scared, he just wasn't. It was so ironic, he almost wanted to laugh. But he daren't. As he stared into the eyes of this stranger, this stranger who had somehow managed to invade the one place Ianto felt safe, the one place Ianto could always rely on, he felt... Confident. Confident that Jack would arrive, Jack would save him. Jack always saved him. He slowly pressed the button on his coms to open the line to Gwen and Jack. He knew Gwen was somewhere close to the Hub, Jack was further afield.

"Do you think I'm stupid, Mr Jones?"
Ianto's eyes widened as he saw the glint of a gun. The stranger slowly squeezed the trigger. The gunshot was deafening. But nothing compared to the searing pain in Ianto's chest as he gasped.

"..No.."

He heard Jacks voice over the coms.

As Jack sped through the streets of Cardiff, he was willing Ianto to be okay. With a start, he realised that his hope for Ianto was much more than he had had for his other team members. Did this mean..? Jack shook his head. Now was not the time to think about things like that.
"..Jack..?"
Ianto's voice sounded strained and all the time he could hear his laboured, ratling breath.
"I'm coming, Yan.."
"Jack.." He took a long, shaky breath, "Jack.. I love you.."
Jacks heart felt as though it had stopped. If.. If Ianto were saying this.. He must think he's dying.. Jack almost sobbed
"Ianto..! I.. Oh shit, please hang on.. For me!"
His only reply was a gargled gasp. And then silence.
"Ianto? Yan!?"

There was a pause.

"Jack?" Gwen's voice was shaking, "I.. I'm sorry Jack.. Ianto's d-"
Jack wrenched his ear piece off. He pulled the SUV into a layby, switching the engine off. He was silent for a moment.

As Gwen had knelt by Ianto's blood soaked body, she let a silent tear slip.
"I'm so sorry, Ianto.."

She hadn't taken her own ear piece out, waiting to hear from Jack. As she stroked Ianto's hair gently off of his face, she heard a mournful cry through the coms system. It sounded more animal than human. Like an animal in intense pain. Gwen closed her eyes as she realised what it was. The sound of a heart breaking.
