This was going to be a long night. Bloody brilliant, the way her life was going. First her mum, then, getting pregnant, and now this? A plane crashes on an island on the way to give her baby a better life. To give her a better life. Everything was ruined. It wasn't fair.
She sat herself down gingerly by a fire someone had started. She was cold, still shaken up from the chaos. There was so much to worry about... the rescue teams, and whether they would actually save them all, taking care of herself in the meantime, and apparently there was a monster that was wreaking havoc amongst the trees. Lovely.
The main thoughts in her head, however, were her regrets. She wished she could just go back and do things over. Not keep the baby, not trust that stupid bastard who had sent her out the door without a second thought, with his baby no less, and she certainly, definitely would not have said those terrible things to her mum.
I bet you're laughing at me now, eh, Mum? Stuck with a baby I never wanted, left to die in this wretched place, she mused.
Nothing was going the way she'd planned at all. Ha! And as if she needed a bit more to muck up her life, now she was going to die alone on an island, a world away from anybody who cared about her... not that there were many of those people left.
I never asked for any of this! she thought, furiously, I was supposed to have taken care of everything by myself!
A man began to walk towards her. Great, she thought, They've sent someone to check on the poor pregnant girl who can't fend for herself. Honestly, I'm not a child!
"Hiya!" he said in a bright voice. "Do you want a blanket?"
"Oh, thanks, I've got one," she replied hesitantly.
"Well, you're warming for you, take mine," he insisted.
Fool, she thought as she took his blanket. Doesn't he know better than to cozy up to a girl who's about to have a baby? How stupid can he be? "Thanks," is what she actually replied.
He grinned, "So, first plane crash?"
Brilliant, he's a funny guy, she thought sarcastically.
"What gave it away?" she replied, rolling her eyes a bit.
"Ah, you can always spot the newbies," he said with a smile, and then more seriously added, "We're gonna be okay, you know."
How did he just KNOW this? How could he be so sure? she wondered.
"Are we?" she asked.
He smiled. "We're on a beautiful island. We'll sleep under the stars, and before you know it, the helicopters will come and take us home."
"You really think they'll find us?" she asked with a slight pessimistic tone.
He looked a bit confused. "Well, yeah. Why wouldn't they?"
What am I supposed to say? This boy obviously doesn't know that the world is out to get us, she inwardly chuckled at him.
She managed to say, "Thanks."
"I'm Charlie," he said.
She felt a bit more at peace around this Charlie. "I'm Claire. Nice to meet you, Charlie."
Charlie smiled and said genuinely, "It's nice to meet you."
Maybe this won't be so bad after all.
