Mission Failed
John Connor lay on the ground, broken. Dying. Nothing could save him now. They both knew.
Cameron kneeled over him, her features soft despite her endoskeleton showing here-and-there.
"I failed my mission," she said in a whisper. The back of her hand stroke through his hair, as if to apologize. "There is no more reason for me to exist."
John managed a ghost of a smile.
"You haven't," his voice was fading, but he knew she could hear him. "John Connor will lead the human race to victory."
Cameron cocked her head to the side, confused. She expected an explanation. She knew she didn't have to ask for it.
His smile became truer. Brotherly or not, he was really fond of her when she did this. She seemed so... simple. So innocent. And he knew, for a fact, that no power in the 'verse could stop her.
So a new mission he gave her.
"Take my body to a surgery," he said. He didn't specify what kind of surgery, for he knew her machine mind would make the right choice. "You will lead the human race against Skynet..." He looked deeply into her unblinking eyes, suddenly serious. "...as John Connor."
For a moment he feared that she would refuse, that she would answer something along the lines of "I do not take orders from you" or "This is not my mission".
He should've known better. She merely smiled at him. The same smile she had when they first met. "Thank you for explaining."
John returned her smile sadly. Guiltily. He knew what kind of burden he was giving her, how hard it would be. He wanted to tell her to be careful, tell her that her soldiers would turn on her if they realized who she was, what she was, tell her that he was happy to have fought by her side. He couldn't. He didn't have the strength anymore.
"I trust you."
It was all he managed to say. He tried to put as much weight, as much meaning into it as he physically could. It sounded like a wail.
His remaining hand reached out for her. She grabbed it gently.
"I won't fail you again, John."
She was back to expressionless. Her voice was solemn.
But there was no one to hear her anymore.
