Pretending

"Daddy, what's wrong?"

"She's going to die… they're going to die…"

"Oh, daddy! Why is God letting mommy and Ryou die?"

"Don't be silly, Ryou… Amane's dying, not you… she's going to die with her mother…"

"Daddy! I'm Amane, I'm right here—"

"Stop playing your games!"

"I'm sorry, daddy. You're right…"

The smell was exactly how she remembered it, all those years ago. It was slightly spicy, slightly flowery, and slightly earthy—it was a natural smell, yet, somehow it felt manufactured. Only now, that she took the time to breathe in the aroma of the grave, she noticed. Her fingers stroked against the cold surface of the granite, as if touching the stone would enable her to hear the voice of the loved one buried beneath her. She wondered what brought her back to this haunting grave.

Why had she returned to the place that brought her so many sad memories?

Maybe it was because she felt so empty inside without her older brother, Bakura Ryou, whom has died years ago in a car accident. His death still seemed like a nightmare to her, and she patiently waited until she would suddenly wake up to realize that his death was only a horrible dream invented by her mind. Days passed, and they soon grew into years. Deep down, she knew it wasn't because he died exactly six years ago that drew her here.

Her eyes stung from wearing contacts for so long. She would be almost identical to her brother if it weren't for her green eyes. Green represented jealousy, greed… Amane didn't want to even admit it to herself, but she always envied her older brother. He was their favourite, and when he died along with her mother, her father was crushed.

He would rather have her dead then his precious Ryou.

Maybe she returned here, because she knew deep down it was somehow her fault. She was evil and wicked, and this was her punishment for letting Ryou die. She's not Amane anymore. Amane is dead, buried underneath the ground, and it's her name that's written on the tombstone.

No… she knew the real reason why she returned here, six years after his death. She returned here because she wasn't willing to let go of herself and become her brother, but she didn't want to upset father. She pretended to try her best to be Ryou and at the same time throw away Amane. It was only here that she felt as if it was safe to talk with Amane.

She set the new journal that she had bought on the way home on top of the cold, hard granite surface. Opening to the first page, she wrote: Dear Amane…

The End

If someone could make sense out of this, I'll give them a cookie, and if someone can tell me what novel series this is was inspired by/similar to, I'll give them a bigger cookie.

I obviously do not own Yuugiou. I don't claim to be an expert on it either, as I only watched the dubbed versions of the show and read only bits of the manga series. This is obviously takes place in an alternate universe, as you know very well as I do that the lovable Bakura-kun is alive and that his younger sister Amane, along with his mother, is assumed to be dead.

Constructive criticism and flames are expected, and reviews will be appreciated. My characterization is horrible, I know, but considering that we've never met Amane…
