Please forgive me Bruder...

But I won't be home again.

A few tears drop onto the paper, making the ink blur in places, but the man just calmly rolls the letter up, and ties it with an old piece of string. Lying his old necklace beside it on the table, he takes one last look at the place that held so many memories, and with a sense of finality shut the door.

He slowly walks to the building in which the papers will be signed. He can already feel his strength waning as he walks up to the room and looks at the somber faces of the few men allowed clearance. They look at him sadly, almost with pity and guilt. But they knew if they showed him that, it would make him mad.

He watches as the final few words are written, signatures are scrawled, and they all slowly stand and leave the room, not looking at him as they do so. He stands and feels his vision blur once again.

Only when the deed was done, and he could feel himself fading away did he allow a few regrets to slip past his cold demeanor ,and tears pooled at the edge of his eyes when he heard the anguished shouts of his younger brother as he discovered the letter and memento. It was too late though, and with his final breath, he smiles even as the tears spill down his cheeks.

"Sorry West, don't be sad, I'm going to be joining Ol' Fritz now," he chokes on a sob and blackness takes over his vision as he feels the physical world begin to fade away until he was no more.
