Tap. Tap. Tap.
I clutched my pencil in my hand, trying to ignore the sound. I could hear the useless chatter of my so-called human friends, the exceptions being Mike and Angela, as they talked about the upcoming football game against some school from Virginia. Jessica was the main voice I heard and it took me all my strength not to slam her face into the lunch table repeatedly. But none of that was what really annoyed. It was the tie between Edward Cullen's hold on me and my dear nephew's inferior tapping of his pencil as he twirled an apple in his hand.
"Nikolas, what are you doing?" Jessica asked.
He paused, glancing at her through bored blue eyes. He looked so much like Damon did as a teenager it hurt me to look at him sometimes. I know my brother was alive, I just never got the courage to talk to him. Or Stefan, which was probably why I could never really look Edward in the face too long. He reminded me of Stefan. He gave a shrug before answering, "My mom told me when I was a kid, if you twirl the apple by the stem while saying the alphabet when it falls off the on letter you say, that's the name of the person you'll marry."
"What about other fruit?"
"I don't know," he muttered. He sighed.
I reached over, talking the apple. "Don't believe that stuff, Jess."
"You just say that because you know who you're marrying in the future." Jessica scoffed and looked at Edward as she said it. "Let's see if its right. Do it, I dare you."
I shook my head, "No."
Nikolas leaned over, looking me in the eyes, "Come on Bella, do it."
His voice was low, hypnotic and I knew he was using compulsion. He seemed to think it worked on me if he used enough magic along with it. And it was working at the moment. But my hand stopped before I could tighten my hold on it. Frowning, he shoved it in my hand and told me to do it or he'd blow our secret. I bit back a growl and began to twirl the apple, reciting the alphabet. I passed E and nothing happened. So I kept going.
"L, M, N, O, P, Q, R..." the apple fell from the stem, landing in Nikolas' hand with a light thump. Both of us exchanged looks before I glanced over at Edward. He looked just as shocked. I mean, sure, I always knew I wasn't going to marry him, but to see the look on his face right now was just to heart breaking. But I shook it off and walked over to get another apple and walked back over, shoving it in Nikolas' hand. He looked at me with a confused look, "You do it, Nikki."
He sighed and began to twirl it, "A, B..." it fell. His expression turned emotionless before he glanced at me, "There's your answer," he spoke in a dead voice. "I'm marrying someone whose name starts with a B."
He got up and walked off, forgetting his tray. With a groan, I got off after him, excusing myself. I found him leaning against the wall, scuffing up his tennis shoes even more as he sighed and looked at me. Before I could open my mouth, he cut me off, "I don't want to hurt her again."
"I know,"
"Bonnie...she deserves my dad. At least he won't mess up her mind."
I frowned and the sound of a slap echoed through the hallway. My palm didn't sting as I glared viciously at him. "Nikolas, I know for a fact that Damon of all people can't help Bonnie the way you think he can. He can help her because, yes he loves her, but he can't heal her like you can. She loves you, you moron. And if you read any of the emails she sent you, you'd know that."
Nikolas sighed and leaned over, kissing his aunt's forehead. "I really wish I could believe that."
