This was how it started. A smile when he woke up, a smile he would remember for the rest of his days. A smile that would remind him what exactly he was here for, and wouldn't let him feel any regrets. A hundred years of pain and suffering hit him in one moment, but this was how it was destined to be.

This was how it was supposed to be. The earliest memory of them, together, was when Aang helped her to remember what it felt like to be your own age, after so many years of being someone so much older. Then, after that... maybe the old lady in that village really could predict the future. Or maybe she just needed something to open her eyes to what already was. Sometimes I forget what a powerful bender that kid is. Those ten words.

It started with those simple moments. A simple gesture, overlooked at the time, that ended up in stories they told to their children before bedtime. Kya would beg to hear the time that they got trapped in the cave with the nomads who sang songs. Bumi always wanted to hear about the crazy king who was his father's oldest friend and made him do all sorts of wacky things. Tenzin would listen to any story with a quiet fascination, wanting to hear more. Their children, who he couldn't imagine life without.

And their friends, who meant the world to them.

And Katara would often find Aang just remembering, thinking about those simple moments that had fallen into place so perfectly.

"Hey," she would say.

He'd turn around and see her, and smile, and wrap his arm around her shoulder.

"What were you thinking about?" she'd ask, even though she already knew.

"Just the old times," he responded, and pulled her closer.

And she would know that he meant the times it began, when everything started and never stopped.

It was these moments that she missed the most now, without him to remember with her.
