A poem about the implied love between Alice and Uncas-a lot better than my poor summary makes it. ;

This poem is from Alice's viewpoint about her love for Uncas, so all you Uncas/Alice fans get excited! ;)

Here I lie beneath the sheet

Of sifting fallen leaves

And only the wind knows

Only the wind...and thee

I feared thee once upon a time

Feared on the day we met

And only the wind knows

But that soon changed within my soul

When my soul warmed to thee

Now only the wind knows

I loved thee, Uncas, dearly so

But couldn't show 't to thee

I knew 't 'neath the waterfall

when thou clung fast to me

The water rushed above our heads

And thou clung fast to me

I felt thy heartbeat 'neath my hand

Thy hand upon my hair

When Magua took me from the falls

My heart feared much for thee

But only the wind knows

Yet still I knew thou'd come for me

Thou'd come and set me free

Now only the wind knows

I hoped upon the mountain top

Hoped much to be set free

But only the wind knows

Only the wind...and thee

And then thou came I saw thee there

Thou not so far from me

Now only the wind knows

I saw love burning in thy eyes

Burning there for me

Thou fought and many braves did fall

Beneath thy knife and gun

Yet only the wind knows

Thou fought with Magua on the stone

He struck thee o'er and o'er

Now only the wind knows

Our eyes locked long over the space

Locked long thine eyes on me

And only the wind knows

Then Magua snatched thee from my heart

Tearing my heart from me

And only the wind knows

He flung thee o'er the mountain's edge

And my slain heart with thee

Now only the wind knows

The mountains echoed back thy voice

Back thy voice to me

I gazed upon the depths below

And grief didst beckon me

Though only the wind knows

Magua held his hands outstretched

His hands outstretched for me

I turned my head away from him

I looked my last upon that world

Upon that misery

I leapt from off that wondrous height

Leapt off to follow thee

Long time I fell within the depths

Now here I'll lie beside my love

by thee eternally
