Chapter 1 – Nothing Tastes As Good As Thin FeelsIt was becoming too much.
Lily Randall stared out at the sleeping city before her, at the stars that she could almost touch.
To have the world at your feet was breathtaking, but overwhelming for a small-town girl like her. It was something that could only ever be a dream for everyone in Roscoe.
And now that this dream was coming true for her… everything was spinning out of control.
As a child she'd always been singing and dancing, watching Star Search and knowing that she was so much better than all of them. Knowing that she could BE one of them if she had the opportunity.
And now that it had been placed right into her hands, she knew the underlying demons of fame.
it had all started with that fateful singing contest at Mickey's, the one that Travis had signed her up for behind her back. She'd been mad at him then, but she forgave him the moment that the executive from Jive had stood up and introduced himself and a five-year record contract to her. She'd forgotten her anger then.
It was frightening, being sixteen years old and opening for Destiny's Child every year. Even though Beyoncé, Kelly and Michelle had opened their hearts to her and treated her like a much-beloved younger sister, she felt alone.
She felt like she didn't belong.
It reassured her, to know that in just three days she would see her friends again, after two years of looking out at a different city every few days. But would they recognize her? Would they remember her as the Lily that campaigned for class president in the ninth grade? The Lily that had almost ruined the friendship that had taken fourteen years to build?
The Lily who was afraid that everyone would forget her?
It was possible, that as soon as she stepped into the hallways of Roscoe High, that everyone would forget the Lily Randall that had dyed her hair pink to win votes from the ninth grade and only think of the girl who signed autographs and posed for pictures on a daily basis.
She remembered when she had been like that, excited about fame and those who were lucky enough to have it, dreaming of the day when she could have all those people screaming HER name.
But now she knew better. Now she knew that fame came with a price, and it was far more than she had.
And the only word on the receipt… was anorexia.
With all that she knew spinning into a mind-blowing vortex, her weight was something she could control. At first she had skipped meals when she was over-stressed, but as the months wore on, the meals, and her weight, fell to the roadside.
She knew that this wasn't right. That this wasn't good for her, her doctor had told her that enough times. He'd given her medication and a request for another appointment, but the pills lay in the garbage and her schedule was too tight for her to go in for the doctor's appointment that she didn't want to go to anyway.
People who recognized her looked surprised as they hugged her and commented on how much thinner she looked in person, but Lily brushed this off as motivation and continued on her quest to be thin.
She'd tried to tell herself that her journey was over, that she could now stop losing weight, but her mind refused to believe her emaciated body and continued to purge the fat from her body, retaining only enough to keep her alive. It rejected the cries for help and told her body that beauty was pain, that the suffering would come to an end when she was perfect.
Even if that perfection was death.
Lily looked out again at the unknowing city, and sighed.
Nothing tastes as good as thin feels.
