"Here."
It takes several seconds for Komatsu to realize the huge bundle Zebra shoves at his face is in fact a bouquet of flowers; not because it doesn't look like a bouquet of flowers, bursting with pinks and oranges and all shades of yellow, but because Zebra has brought him flowers.
It's the sort of thing he's come to expect of a visit from Coco or Sunny. Toriko isn't one to bother with such displays of affection, which Komatsu is grateful for; since becoming Toriko's partner, he sees the bishokuya at least three times a week, whether it's as an invitation for companionship on a job or simply to share a meal, and by now his apartment would be overflowing with floral arrangements.
Zebra is watching him impatiently, waiting for a reaction. Komatsu pushes aside his surprise and lifts the bouquet to his nose, inhaling the sharply pungent scent of citrus with pleasure. The smell goes straight to his stomach. It gurgles quietly, Zebra's expression dissolving into a smirk as the soft sound reaches his ears. With his instincts humming steadily in curiosity, Komatsu plucks one of the orange petals, bites into it, and nearly gasps aloud as the sweet tang of fruit juice floods his palate.
"Zebra-san, these are incredible," Komatsu says as he chews first a yellow (lemon) then pink (grapefruit) petal, licks experimentally at a stamen and delights at the tiny flakes of zesty lime peel.
The smirk grows. Komatsu grabs a handful of the flowers and offers them to Zebra. "You have to try them!"
Zebra forgoes Komatsu's delicate sampling and crams the flowers in his mouth all at once, crunching readily while Komatsu hugs the bouquet to his chest, mind racing ahead to recipes the petals can be used to season, bringing out that full flavor he's constantly chasingā¦
There's no doubt Zebra means for him cook with these. Now Komatsu knows they're edible, receiving flowers from his friend suddenly makes a lot more sense. Still, it's such a fanciful gesture he has a hard time believing Zebra came up with the idea on his own.
As they climb the stairs to his apartment - Komatsu's quick, light footsteps in conjunction with Zebra's own, plodding and heavy, drawing peeping neighbors to their windows, wondering which King is visiting today and recoiling hastily as they recognize who - Komatsu hears Zebra muttering under his breath. He catches the words 'that Sunny bastard', smiling slightly at the thought of Zebra asking the flamboyant bishokuya for advice.
Komatsu unlocks his door, hurrying down the hall to make room for Zebra to duck inside after him. A hand, rough with barely contained strength, settles on the nape of his neck, and Komatsu leads the way to his kitchen.
A/N - I saw a piece of fanart with Komatsu holding a bouquet clearly given to him by Zebra, and while trying to reconcile my image of Zebra with him gifting flowers to anyone, I realized it would be perfectly in character for our favorite tsundereā¦as long as they were edible.
