You know that happy girl you see all the time? The one who always has a giant smile on her face, always ready to take on the enemy or just cause trouble?
Well… she's a lie.
Have you ever considered that?
No, of course not.
You were too busy looking at the surface to pay attention to what was behind the mask.
The girl behind the mask is broken.
Her dreams are haunted by memories so old, you'd think she'd be able to forget them by now. Believe me, she wishes she had that power.
But it's the same. Every night, it's always the same.
Sometimes, she'll lie there and pray for sleep not to come. Other times, she'll just wait for it to take her because she knows she can't avoid it.
And when the darkness finally comes, her nightmare begins.
At first, it's just a jumble of colors.
Bright yellow, red, always mostly black and white.
Then there are sounds that slowly fade in.
A strange noise that vaguely sounds like rain, and voices.
Then the screaming starts and everything becomes much clearer.
Wherever she looks, blood is splattered everywhere.
Even when she glances down at herself, she sees the redness all over.
For a while, she thinks it's her blood but then she looks around again and her eyes widen.
Stacked on top of each other not even three feet away from her are two mangled bodies, surprise still visible on their bloody faces.
Their limbs are twisted at impossible angles and one of them, clearly a woman, is missing an ear.
She wants to scream at the top of her lungs but her voice doesn't find her.
So she looks away and realizes that she isn't alone.
She sees bright yellow eyes, bodies that could easily blend in with the shadows.
She soon realizes that what sounded like the rain was their claws, dragging slowly on the ground.
Slowly making their way toward her.
She has to get away.
She manages to stand, although her legs are still weak and wobbly.
She takes a few shaky steps to her left, towards the smashed-open window…
Sharp claws rake across her back and this time, she screams.
But when she does, she finds herself back in her soft bed, the sheets damp with sweat.
Sometimes she'll get up and go to bathroom or get a glass of water.
But usually, she'll lie back down without a second thought and wait for a dreamless sleep to find her.
When she awakes a few hours later, she puts her mask back on and goes about her day, smiling as usual.
When the night comes again, she'll huddle under the covers, always safe until sleep comes for her, and pray for someone to save her.
And the sad cycle goes on and on.
