His steps echoing along the halls of the academy, his armour clattering slightly with every step, students and tutors alike stepping aside to make the armoured youth room. Zyv de Raque strode down the halls paying little attention to those he passed. Though he seemed interested only in adjusting his vambraces his mind was far from such a menial task.
His sole reason for being in cheap building called the Neverwinter academy was politics, and with every passing step he could feel his anger at that fact rise. Zyv did not see himself a fool, so when his father informed him that he was to be sent as the Raque families aid to the plague ridden dung-heap of a city called Neverwinter he saw it for what it was, an easy, yet politically positive, manner to rid himself of his embarrassing son. After all, if he had truly wished to fulfil his obligations of aid to that upstart "Lord" Nasher, he would of sent his precious firstborn or one of his brilliant younger sons, not him.
As his thoughts travelled he paid less attention to his surroundings while at the same time the speed of his steps quickened, as such he shouldn't have been surprised (though he was) when he walked straight into somebody. Papers flew everywhere and Zyv took a step back, the girl that he had bumped into probably would have fallen if it weren't for the wall that she hit.
I'm sorry! I should've… I wasn't….
Zyv said nothing; he merely stooped down, collected as much of the papers as he could and, rising, handed them to the girl before sidestepping her and resuming his stride. Though he was certain it was more the girl's fault than his, noblise oblige, he was expected to help when he could and he doubted that gathering a few papers would make him late for the ceremony.
A faint hint of a smile crossed his face, yes today his days of humiliation at the academy would finally be over, what would follow would be a care free duty as a watch officer in the Blacklake district, he had bribed enough men in the city to ensure that, after that it was merely a case of discovering who to bribe to get out of this gods-forsaken city.
As his thoughts moved around such pleasing thoughts he stopped, as he felt, with no better word to describe it, wrong. He felt a coppery taste in his mouth and his hair seemed to stand on end. The young nobleman stared as the corridor in front of him twisted and simply ripped itself apart. From the "hole", which as he remembered was called a portal, came tumbling out the short and ugly shapes of goblins. The creatures looked around for a second, shaking their heads as if to clear them, it was enough time for Zyv to realize what was happening and draw his short sword before the creatures were on him.
Zyv felt blow after blow strike his armour, glancing off leaving nothing more serious than a bruise, unfortunately armor would not be enough to see him through. As he managed to stab one several hands grabbed his sword arm, effectively immobilizing it. Several grabbed his legs, one latched on around his hip and tried to stab him in the armpit and another managed to jump onto his back and tried to get to his throat. The man, more through chance than plan, slammed his back against the wall, drawing a squeal of pain from the creature on his back, he slammed his back against the wall again and was pleased to hear a crack followed be the goblin sliding off of him.
With his free hand Zyv drew his dagger and brought it down on the back of the goblin holding his waist. His pleasure at killing another of his attackers vanished as he felt a sharp pain; one of the goblins had found an opening in his armour and exploited it. The noble's cry of pain turned into a snarl and he began hacking at the goblins assaulting him with no finesse but devastating effectiveness. Bones snapped and limbs were separated from the body as Zyv carved the goblins, two fled leaving the noble the freedom to hiss in pain and clutch his wounds, he did not get long.
The goblins that fled returned leading a dozen of their friends, all the man could do was grit his teeth and brace himself for the goblins attack to hit him.
