A/N: This came into being after being challenged to a drabble. I hope it is somewhat enjoyable…And yes the title sucks, I had no ideas so I just went with the first things I fingers typed.

Fingers clasp behind his head as he bows down, knees digging into eyes forcing tears to remain at bay. Thumbs tap at the beat of his broken heart. Each beat feels like another piece of him is shattering, another part of his soul disappearing away forever.

He could do this; he has done it a hundred times before. Once more would not kill him.

Then why did he feel like he was dying.

Like his heart was falling apart with each shuddering breath he takes.

If Yusuke tried hard enough he could almost make out Mokuro's castle over in the distance, he could envision the harsh outlines of the walls that kept him and Hiei apart. And he refused to think of what could happen inside those walls. He wants to pretend that the words they whispered in the heat of passion on stormy nights is enough to promise forever. But this is still new, young and raw. It could still break apart easily with the strength of a gust of wind. A new flame is always shaky and weak when the match is first struck.

He cannot even remember why he agreed to this. Why did he agree to take this throne that he despises?

Why did he agree to allow Hiei to run back to that horrible place time and time again?

Would he be broken in pieces again just like time and time again?

Would he be crawling on his knees again begging the fire demon for just a touch? Begging him for salvation through the burning fingers that run down the boy's spine. Beg for the burn as they lie together through the long, sleepless nights.

Yusuke bows on the hard concrete floor as fingertips rub raw against the floor. He just wants to feel that touch. To see his loved one once more. To know that they will still manage no matter how far apart they are.

All he has though is a quickly scribbled letter that was snuck to him in the middle of war propaganda and easily broken truces. A note that was crumpled deep at the bottom of an envelope that Yusuke almost missed.

It should be enough to ease his worries, to show Yusuke just how strong the newly struck flame was. Yet, he still finds himself unsure and worrying as his forehead presses harshly against the floor, knees sore from the position.

He wants to believe the note, wants to know that Hiei will always be there for him. Wants to know that their love will last eternity. Tears escape as Yusuke lifts his head, doubt and insecurity still warring deep inside of his head. But he needs to leave the room, needs to become the leader that will listen to more treaties that will be broken with the first gust of wind.

Black hair falls before his eyes as he grabs the crinkled note and shoves it deep inside of his pocket and forces back the traitorous tears. A leader never cries.

'I will always wait for you.'
