"Touch me again and I will personally rip your eyes out." She snarled, pulling her arm free from one of the Imperial Guardsmen. She narrowed her bright, jade-colored eyes and bared her fangs.
The one that had been holding her frowned, "C'mon, Khajiit! You've been caught stealing from this townsperson. You're under arrest." He reached for her again, but the cat dodged.
"You an' whose army? The emperor's dead. Ya hold no authority over me." She reached and pulled out her silver long sword, "So go on yer way an' no one gets 'urt 'ere."
The two guards laughed, "Us? Get hurt? Khajiit, you just earned your way straight to the Imperial Prison."
The first one lunged, but she let out a hiss and swiped at him; blood sprayed from the would that sliced his head clean off as his head tumbled off of his body and onto the floor. She took a step back from the other one as he watched his buddy fall. The young Khajiit grabbed the shopkeeper and placed her in front of her, bloody blade against pale white throat. The homely dressed woman whimpered as it pricked her throat, drawing blood. However, Mara had other things to worry about.
She had just betrayed one of the Thieves Guild's most honored rules: never kill. Not only that, but she was sure that, as she killed, she felt something cold pass through her. She knew the Dark Brotherhood had observed her killing and was now after her. However, she turned her mind back to the present and saw the guard's face turn pale as he knelt beside his buddy's body…only for Mara to realize that they were twins, not buddies.
She cursed and threw the shopkeeper at the man before running out of the door, praying her agility and speed wouldn't let her down. Quickly, she sheathed her weapon and jumped, landing on top of a building as she ran for her life out of the city, landing just outside the walls. An Imperial Guard came trotting up on a horse and, obviously not knowing what she had just done, asked,
"Something wrong, Khajiit?"
Mara, panting, replied, "I need your horse."
"Pardon?"
"Gimme your damn horse!" She held up her hand and a burst of fire flew from it, knocking him off of his horse. Quickly, Mara jumped on and snapped the reins. The horse quickly hit a run before she could ya 'hi-ya!'
The horse ran for about as far and as fast as it could before finally stopping at a river. That was all right, though, she was far from the Imperial City and she had lost the guards, not like the one she had hit would be chasing anyone until that wound healed. She knelt down at the river and, joining her horse, quickly gulped up some water. The horse hit her with its nose lightly, as if saying 'what's to eat?' Mara chuckled softly and pulled out one of the apples she had stolen. She stared at it for a moment, but then sighed and tossed it to the horse, who ate it instantly. She smiled and patted her neck.
"You'd better enjoy that, girl, for I had to kill for it."
The horse nickered happily and laid down beside her. Mara patted her neck again and stood, "I'll be back. I gotta get some wood to build a fire and something to sleep on."
Within an hour, she had gathered everything she had needed – okay, so she stole the pallet from a deserted camp – and quickly lit a fire with her magic. She tossed the horse, which she had named 'Midnight', for she was as black as night, and then curled up in the pallet, drifting off to sleep.

Someone moved in the dark quiet of the night, towards the sleeping Khajiit, though he was not visible to anyone who was searching for him. His hazel eyes flickered to the sleeping mare near the Khajiit, and then back to his prey. He could sense the blood she had spilled all over her, calling out to him. And he was more than happy to answer that call, as the Night Mother had instructed him to do.
Slowly, ever so slowly, he walked towards her, creepy silently through the ankle-high grass. He bent down to examine the potential new recruit.
She was an odd colored Khajiit – that much was for sure. Her fur wasn't tawny, like all the other's, but instead, it was a beautiful, snow-white color with black tiger stripes streaking her fur. Unlike the other Khajiit, who tended to hide their hair, hers was a bit long and messy, but that was probably because she was on the run. She had a single earring in her left ear, but nothing else about her was very decorative.
A slow smile crossed over his face as he stood. This…this would be perfect.
-----------------------------
When she awoke, it was still nighttime, and she couldn't help but wonder what had awaken her. Only to realize a moment later that a man clad in all black stood at the foot of her pallet, a smile on his face, which was hidden by a black hood. The tiger-like Khajiit stood with a hiss and reached for her sword, but the man held up a hand, a peaceful look on his hidden face.
"Easy, Khajiit. I wish not to fight." He said simply, but then a soft smile spread over his face, "You sleep rather soundly for a murderer. That's good." He practically purred as he took a step closer, but Mara took a step back, "You'll need a clear conscious for what I am about to propose."
Mara swallowed; she had been right in assuming the Dark Brotherhood would come after her! But, he wasn't trying to kill her… So, instead, she managed out, "Who-Who are you?" Her stance was a telltale sign she was nervous.
"I am Lucien Lachance, a speaking for the Dark Brotherhood. And you, you are a killer. A taker of life. A harvester of souls. Your work, your deathcraft, pleased the Dark Mother. And, so, I come to you with an offering. An opportunity…for you to join our rather unique family." Behind his hood, he smiled.
She loosened her stance a bit. Okay, so he wasn't going to kill her. Good. But…he was offering her to join the Dark Brotherhood. If she didn't join them, the Thieves Guild would find her and kill her, she knew it. And so, she had no other choice but to say, "Please continue, Mr. Lachance." Her ears fell.
"Ah, I find your etiquette rather refreshing. Now, please, listen carefully. On the Green Road to the north of Bravil lies the Inn of Ill Omen. There you will find a man named Rufio. Kill him, and your initiation into the Dark Brotherhood will be complete. Do this, and the next time you sleep in a location I deem secure, I will reveal myself once more, bearing the love of your new family."
"Rufio shall die by my hand!" She said, managing some kind of conviction in her voice.
"Excellent! Now, please accept this token from the Dark Brotherhood. It is a virgin blade, and thirsts for blood. May it serve your endeavors well." From his cloak, he pulled out a small dagger that seemed to give off an aura of longing; Mara took it without question and played with it for a moment before smiling. "Until we speak again."
He raised a hand and a green aura surrounded him before he disappeared. Actually, he was still there, Mara could smell him, but he had turned himself invisible. She allowed him to leave as she bent down and gently patted Midnight's neck.
"C'mon, girl. We have a job to do."
Midnight whinnied and tossed her mane, but stood up and allowed her mistress to mount her. Mara clicked her tongue and the mare began to trot in the direction where she was led. And, unknowingly, in the direction of a new life for the both of them…
