They were after me, of that I was certain. My bare feet were covered in bloody scrapes, a sight that was not completely unusual to me. I pushed my way through branches and leaves, making my way though the dense forest, until I came to a clearing.
There was a pile of bodies before me. My heart lurched; Iggy, Gazzy, Nudge, Angel, Ella, and my mother. Their eyes were sightless, all of them, not just Iggy. Their heart I knew were still. Standing on top of them was someone I thought to never see ever again. Ari; my half-brother. His hands were around someone's neck, ready to snap. FANG!
"Ah, Max, you've found our little dirty deed." I spun around to see Jeb Batchelder, my father. Biologically, he was. In any other way, no. Once upon a time I looked up to him. That ended when he abandoned my flock and I.
'let. Fang. Go."I let acid seep into my voice.
"Oh, Maximum," he chuckled. "I suppose now it is time for me to give the cliché bad-guy speech, isn't it?"
"Suits you" I snarled.
"Ignoring that. Now, maximum, you have two options. You can let me take you away, with no fighting, and Fang here goes free. Or, you can resist, and your precious Fang will be no more."
Fang hissed as Ari's fingernails dug into his skin. I almost laughed.
"THAT was your bad-guy speech? Those weren't options. You know what I'll choose." I snarled again.
"Choose." Jeb growled.
Then, going against everything I've ever set out to do, I said: "Let Fang go. I'll come with you."
Jeb smiled grimly at me, then nodded at Ari.
Who proceeded to snap Fang's neck.
"FANG!"
I sat up in bed, a thick layer of sweat covering my body. staring into the darkness, I recognized my surroundings: I was in my room, at my Moms' house. Thank God.
"Max?" Fang's head poked through my door. He was alive. He came in, closing the door behind him.
"Fang," I whimpered. He was at my side in an instant, his arms cradling me. Tear escaped my eyes.
"Max, Max, shh, it's alright. I'm here, you're okay. Shh, shh, it's okay." He soothed. Shaking, I managed to control my sobs. I nestled my head into Fang's chest. He kissed my forehead.
"Was it the dream again?" Fang asked me carefully. Pulling back, I stared into his deep, mesmerizing dark eyes.
"I don't ever want…to lose you…ever," I choked out. Then, before he could even begin to comprehend what I said, I smashed my lips to his. After about a minute, he pulled back to rest his forehead on mine.
"Max," he breathed. "I will always be here for you. I'm not going anywhere. I…I love you, Max."
O. EHM. GEE. Fang LOVES me. I mean, I know we are, like, together, but we've never actually said the "l" word. Wow.
"I love you, Fang." Now that I actually said it, it felt so right. I wanted to say it ALL THE TIME.
I pushed him down onto the bed and snuggled against his chest.
As his arms came around me, I felt myself succumb to sleep. His hand rubbed circles on my back, between my wings.
Slowly, I drifted off to sleep. I knew I wouldn't have another nightmare with Fang here. He protected me.
He was my black winged savior.
