A/N: Just a ramble that I wrote in about a half hour. I don't know where it came from and I'm not really happy with it but I spent the time to write it so I might as well post it. I might take it down and fix it at some point or I might not.

And a special thanks to all the service men and women who make our freedom possible! ;)

Enjoy!

Another year, another holiday. When asked, most people would say that their favorite holiday was Christmas, Halloween, or even Thanksgiving. Not Michelangelo. This was his favorite, the Fourth of July. Every year he and his brothers would spend the whole day watching classic 4th of July movies, such as The Patriot, Born on the 4th of July, and his personal favorite, Independence Day. The combined comedic antics of Will Smith and Jeff Goldblum had him laughing his shell off every time. After the movie-a-thon they would find a nice quiet rooftop overlooking Elis Island and watch the fireworks display. This is where they were now. Donnie was trying to find the station that would be playing the music the fireworks were choreographed to, Raph was handing out the drinks and Leo was doing his searching-for-possible-enemies thing. Mikey found his desired spot and sat down, opening his coke and taking a big gulp. His brothers soon joined him on the ledge and the waiting began. This was the part Mikey hated the most. He was bored. When he was bored he began to think.

"Do you guys consider yourselves to be Americans?" Mikey asked.

His brothers looked at him as if he'd grown a second head. "I'm serious guys. Do you think we're Americans?"

"We live in America Mikey, of course we're Americans." Raph gruffly replied as if it were obvious.

Mikey scowled, "You're wrong Raph, just 'cause we live here doesn't make us citizens."

"Why the sudden concern Mikey?" Leo asked.

"I'm not so much concerned as confused." Mikey saw the confused looks his brothers gave him so he continued, "Since we obviously don't have rights as Americans, but we live here, are we still Americans?"

"Why does it matter?" Raph asked. He was starting to get irritated.

"If it doesn't matter then what do we fight for?" Mikey countered, challenging his brother.

"Simple, we fight to save people. End of story."

"No not end of story Raph," Donnie was starting to see what Mikey was trying to tell them, "Why did the colonists fight for their independence?"

"They fought to be free from tyranny, oppression and persecution." Leo supplied.

"Yes and why do we fight?" Donnie asked, directing his question to Mikey.

"We fight to escape annihilation; we fight for our right to live, to exist. But we also fight so these people can have 'The American Dream' " Mikey realized he answered his own question.

"You see Mikey? We are Americans because we fight for our freedom, just as the original colonists did back then and just as Americans still do today."

"Yeah, thanks guys. Hey the show is starting!" Mikey smiled as the night sky lit up with the brilliant colors and echoed with the small explosions.

"Hey, Mikey?" Raph whispered.

"Yeah Raph?"

"Next time ya doubt yourself, I'm gonna pound the doubt right out of ya, ya hear me?"

"I hear ya and Raph?"

"Yeah?"

"Thanks."
