Disclaimer: Batman and Co belong to DC and co and their creative people. Definitely not to a two-bit IT and Engineering student at university. :-) And I promise to give them back...eventually. ;-) In pieces, maybe, but I'll give them back. Honest.

Characters: Batman (main) & Nightwing (implied).

Word Length: 150 words exactly (prose, not counting title, byline, notes, etc).

Warnings: Deathfic. So leave me alone. I've warned you.

Notes: Written late last year for the Blüdhaven list (and only just getting to here), this is in response to two list challenges: (1) Cindy's long-standing challenge to write something about one of her pictures (I chose the one with the same name); (2) a challenge to write a 150 word story with the first-line: "The window exploded in a shower of glass." In other words, this is what happens when I was sick and tired of assignments, had tons of work left to do, but was checking out what I've missed online anyway... :-)

DON'T LEAVE

by SahRae Hyjo

The window exploded in a shower of glass. Or maybe it imploded. Either way, it was smashed.

Glass shards crash-tinkled as they landed on the wooden floor and were promptly crushed by his rolling body. Thank God for Kevlar.

Shards glistened in the moonlit darkness. Sharp. Jewels scattered carelessly on the ground.

Listening. The room was quiet. He couldn't hear anyone – and somehow that was worse. Because he wasn't alone.

The costumed body was lying at the other end of the room. Dark shadows. There was no movement.

His heart was beating in his throat even as he stepped lightly across the room. Wary. Cautious.

Praying.

A box, draped in red cloth...with darker red under the body. Spreading. Crimson wetness.

"No..." A whisper. From him.

He reached. Shaking. Trembling. Horror. Hand on the still chest.

Even through the blue-black Kevlar, the flesh was...not warm. Cool. Cold.

Don't leave me...

Heart-break.

The End
