"No, Jane. We are not naming our child Claudia, Clarissa, or Daphne. God, those are horrible!" Lisbon chuckled, as she held a hand against her large stomach.

Jane rolled his eyes slightly, as a playful grin danced on the edges of his lips. For the past seven months they had been battling the naming game. In the past seven months they had agreed exactly zero times. Their child was doomed to be nameless at this point.

"Well, I still veto Josh, Jacob ..." He trailed off slightly, as he carefully veered the car into a tight turn. "and God-forbid Jefferson."

"Well, we have a nice list of what we refuse to name the baby. We really should work on a list of what we are willing to at least agree on."

Jane nodded in agreement. "Well, I obviously enjoy the vintage names … How about Nathaniel? It has the old time feel, but could be shortened to Nathan, which is less vintage."

Lisbon thought about it for a moment. She definitely didn't hate Nathaniel, even as it was. "I think Nathaniel could work."

Jane smiled softly, grabbing a hold of his wife's hand. "Finally. We agree on something."

Lisbon gave his hand a gentle squeeze. "We still need a girl's name, Jane."

He nodded, "That one could prove more difficult." He smiled softly as a thought hit him. "What about Sara?"

Lisbon's head cocked to the side, "I like that. Sara. Nathaniel. Jane, I think we just decided on a name for our baby."

He pulled her hand to his lips, placing a soft, chaste kiss against the skin. "I think we did."

The drive back to their small cabin was longer than Lisbon liked, especially this late at night when all she really wanted to do was crawl into bed with her husband. The road that they were forced to travel wasn't exactly her favorite either, but their shared piece of heaven was well worth the long drive.

"We're nearly there." Jane whispered, as he watched Lisbon's eyes droop close. She almost always fell asleep on the way home anymore. The pregnancy was really starting to take a toll on her small-framed body, and sleep came often for her anymore.

If they hadn't promised to meet Cho and Wiley for dinner to catch up on stuff after their check up at the OB-GYN, they would already be home, tucked tightly into bed. Needless to say, they both missed their co-workers far too much to pass up a chance to meet up with them.

"Jane!"

Lisbon's voice broke through his thoughts quickly, and Jane was able to see the problem quickly. There was nothing he could do. The car was barreling toward them too quickly. The only thing he could do was ensure that his wife and unborn child would live through the accident.

"I love you, Lisbon." Jane whispered, but knew that she could hear him.

Her hand tightened against his, when she realized what he was going to do. Tears formed in her eyes knowing that there was nothing she could do but sit back and let it happened. Her free arm cradled her stomach protectively as Jane swerved the car to the right.

All Lisbon could hear was a groan from her left, mixed with the crunching of metal hitting metal. "Jane!" was all she could scream out.

"JANE!" Lisbon screamed as she tried to crawl off of the gurney that they had yet to strap her down to. "Jane!" His name came out as a whimper this time as she watched them pull his battered body from the car.

"Ma'am, we need you to calm down. We don't want to have to sedate you."

"Is he okay? That's my husband."

The paramedic shrugged, truthfully he had been more worried about the very pregnant woman before him, but he realized that the only way she would calm down is if she knew how her husband was.

"Mark, how's the man?"

Mark sighed. "Not great. Unconscious, though that's to be expected. I expect some broken bones, possible head trauma. He's breathing and alive, that's the best news I have for you. How's the woman?"

"Well, if she would sit still long enough for us to examine her, we would know more. She doesn't appear to be too badly injured, though it's hard to tell if anything could be wrong with the baby, at least until we get her to the hospital."

Mark started to push the gurney that held Jane's unconscious frame, before speaking again. "Well, knowing that her husband is alive might help. Just, keep a close eye on her. These type of situations have been known to go bad really fast before."

"Got it. See you at the hospital."

Lisbon sighed, tears slipping silently down her cheeks. She jerked when she felt a hand graze her shoulder. Turning toward the interruption, she offered her co-workers a sad smile. "You didn't have to come."

Cho nodded his head. "Of course we did."

"Yeah, we're like family. If it was one of us, you and Jane would be there for us." Wiley finished Cho's unspoken sentence.

Lisbon nodded, Wiley had a point. Plus she had to admit that it felt nice not being alone, thinking about how bad it had to be. Three hours she had been sitting there … waiting. It was killing her. Well, at least mentally it was killing her. Then there was the fact that she had been having what she could only describe as contractions for the past hour. She knew that she should tell someone, but she was hoping it was only false labor. Lisbon did not want to give birth to their child without it's father present.

"I'm just … terrified." She shivered slightly at admitting to her fear for her husband. She tended to shy away from saying things like that out-loud, especially in front of her prominently male co-workers, but like Wiley said, they were like family and she needed the comfort.

Wiley sighed, he wasn't great at giving comfort, but Cho was even worse. He eyed his superior for a moment, before standing up. "Can I get you something? Some water maybe?"

Lisbon nodded, "That sounds great, Wiley. Thanks."

With a nodded, Wiley took off down the hallway in search of a vending machine. As Wiley disappeared from view, Cho took the moment to move to the chair that Wiley had just vacated.

"Lisbon."

If it was any other time, and her husband wasn't currently fighting for his life, she would laugh at the prospect of Cho trying to comfort someone. Be it as it may, Cho was offering support and Lisbon needed it. So, with a swipe at her eyes, and damning her tears to hell, she looked up at Cho.

"This is Patrick Jane we're talking about. He is the world's most stubborn human being. If anyone can survive this. It's Jane. Look at what he's survived already. How he was able to pick himself up after everything. How he was able to move on. He is going to pull through this, Lisbon."

Lisbon opened her mouth to say something, when a grunt of pain escaped.

"Lisbon?" Cho asked, a worried look on his face.

"I think I'm going into labor." She answered through panted breaths. "Cho. I can't be in labor. I can't have this baby right now. Jane should be there. I can't have this baby with the father!"

"Yeah, I don't think the baby cares if Jane is there or not. I'm going to get a doctor … nurse .. something."

"Dammit!" Lisbon screamed as another contraction hit her hard. Cho grimaced, but didn't say a word as Lisbon squeezed hard enough to break each and every one of his fingers.

"Breathe." The nurse muttered, her voice was surprisingly upbeat for having to listen to screaming pregnant women all day long.

"I am breathing." Lisbon hissed, and watched with a triumphant look on her face as the nurse back up and left the room.

"That seems about right." Cho muttered under his breath, and regretted his words when Lisbon turned her steely gaze onto him.

"He should be here. He did this to me!"

Cho looked around the room, unsure of what to say. He knew that she didn't mean what she was saying, that the pain was causing her to turn into a she-beast, but he knew that he had to say something. Her look said so. "You know that Jane wouldn't want to miss this, Lisbon. If he could be here, he would."

Then it hit her. He watched her expression change from one of anger and pain, to excruciating pain. "You're right. He's going to miss the birth of his child. Oh God." Tears formed in Lisbon's eyes. "God, I hate hormones." She had never cried so much in her entire life than she had during her pregnancy. It was definitely not something she was going to miss.

"Hey. It will be okay." It was the only comfort he could offer her, because she was right. Jane was going to miss the birth of his own child, and it was going to crush him.

"I just need him to be okay. Do you understand that? I can't do this … any of it … without him. I don't know how he was able to pick himself up after his wife died, because if Jane died, I don't think I could."

Cho nodded, "You could. It would take you some time, but you could. You're just as strong as Jane, just maybe not as stubborn."

Jane groaned. The lights above him were causing his splitting headache to grow worse. With a couple of blinks of his eyes, he allowed his eyes to stay open and attempt to focus. He couldn't remember what exactly had happened, but he could tell that he was injured pretty badly.

"Oh, thank God." He heard Lisbon call out.

"Lisbon?" He questioned, trying to find his wife.

"I'm right here," she called out. As soon as she spoke, he heard the weak cry of an infant.

"Lisbon?"

"I'm so glad you're awake." She whispered as she walked around the curtain on his left hand side. "You had me worried!"

Jane swallowed thickly, "How long have I been out?"

With a weak sigh, Lisbon sat down in the empty chair beside his bed. "Almost a week. You suffered a pretty severe head trauma. They thought they were going to have to open your skull to release the pressure."

Jane nodded, like what she was saying made perfect sense. "What happened?"

Lisbon leaned forward, her hands clasping Jane's. "There was a car. You swerved the car so that you would take the most of the impact."

"Were you hurt … the baby?"

Lisbon smiled, though it held a hint of sadness. She knew what she was about to say would break his heart. "Minor injuries. Cuts, scrapes. Nothing major. The baby is fine. He's healthy."

"He? Wait. You already had him?"

Lisbon nodded, "Apparently he didn't understand that I needed for him to wait for you to be okay. I think it was probably the stress of the accident and the not knowing if you were going to make it. It just took it's toll."

"And have you named him?"

"What we agreed on, at least for the first name."

Jane couldn't help the curious smile that lifted the corner of his lips. "What's that supposed to mean?"

"Well, we never did decide on a middle name. I picked one that felt fitting."

"Oh, jeez, should I be frightened?"

Lisbon chuckled, the smile staying on the edge of her lips. "Not at all." She stood up and disappeared behind the curtain again, before reappearing. "Patrick Jane, meet you're son. Nathaniel Patrick Jane."

Jane's eyes lit up as Lisbon placed his son in his arms. "He's so beautiful. Handsome."

"I think he takes after his father in that department." Lisbon whispered, before kissing Jane's temple. She couldn't help the smile that overtook her lips. Despite the accident, and Jane's injuries, this was one of the happiest days of her life. Sitting with her family. It made her feel hopeful that no matter what life threw at them, that they'd be able to take it on.
