He would never see the sunrise.
Robert was sure of that, as sure as he was of his own name.
He sat on a stone outcrop, just sat as he hadn't done in...well, ever, and watched the moon, his grey eyes tracking it on its slow dance through the sky. Its glow made his face look old, hollow.
There had been so much turmoil in his life, it was good to simply rest...though soon would come a deeper sleep than he had ever before endured. He had made sure of that.
A small smile curled his thin lips upwards. It was indeed time to move on.
It had been for many, many years now; after all, everyone else was gone now, why not follow them into the void?
But no. He refused, in his last moments, to dwell on the pain and the past. He'd had enough of that in his life without it tainting him now.
The sky was lightening now. And as the light without waxed, so the light within him waned, more and more until he lay back onto the rock - and finally, let go.
It felt so good to rest, at last.
