Daniel Jackson hurried into his house. It had been a long day, and he was ready for it to end.
A biting wind followed him inside. He shivered as he reached a hand out for the light and then groaned when repeated attempts at the switch did nothing.
He'd noticed his house was dark when he got home, and he'd hoped it was just his outdoor Christmas decorations that had died, but it seemed like he was without power entirely.
"Great," he muttered. "Just great."
He leaned against the door and took a deep breath, preparing to do battle with the darkness in order to find a flashlight.
Suddenly, his cell phone rang.
Daniel sighed, figuring he'd have to head back to the mountain. His phone rang again. Daniel dug it out of his pocket, gave it a disgusted look, and flipped it open.
"Hello?"
"Daniel?"
Daniel sighed again before he answered the familiar voice on the line. "Yeah, Jack?"
"What'cha doing?"
"Nothing."
"You wanna come to a Christmas party?"
"What?"
"Siler's having a Christmas party, and I don't want to go by myself."
"Jack…"
"Come on, it'll be fun."
Daniel took a hesitant step forward in the darkness, trying to think of how to get out of the party.
"Well, I, um… SHIT!"
Jack heard a loud crash over the phone.
"Daniel? You ok?"
After a moment filled with scratching and scraping sounds, Daniel answered.
"No, Jack, I'm not ok. I just tripped over that blasted tree you put in my entryway."
"It was only two feet tall!" protested Jack.
"Apparently, that's enough to trip on," answered Daniel, more than a bit annoyed.
"Why didn't you move it? I figured you'd put it on a table or something."
"Because I hadn't gotten around to it, that's why," snipped Daniel.
Jack feigned offense while he pulled on his coat and closed up his house.
"Well, see if I ever give you anything again."
"Jack…"
"You probably crushed it. And all my handmade garland, too. For that, you owe me. I'll be over there in ten minutes. You're coming to this party."
Daniel nearly growled at the phone as he righted himself. He pulled a long strand of something stringy out of his hair. He shifted his weight and heard a crunching noise. When he realized what it was, he snapped.
"Jack, I'm covered in tinsel! And you put so many lights on my house that my fuse box must've had a meltdown! So I have no power, which means my heater is frozen up, and those damn fruit loops you put on the tree are everywhere!"
When Daniel was done, Jack was silent for a long moment before he spoke again.
"So, that's a yes, then?"
The sound of the phone disconnecting was Daniel's only answer.
Jack laughed as he climbed into his truck.
A moment later, he was on the road.
Maybe he'd let Daniel skip the party, after all, but he was still heading to his friend's house.
There was no way he was letting Daniel repair a fuse box on his own.
Besides, Daniel covered in tinsel, well, that he just had to see.
