Gav glared at Mush. The crying baby in her arms wailed and Gav cringed. Southern Spark was still asleep on the bunk on the far side of the room, taking a break from the baby that seemed to always be awake. Sometimes, when SS really needed a break, she brought Karina to the LH where newsies were usually more than willing to help out. Today, however, the newsies were quick to leave the LH when they heard the loud cries of the baby. Mush was the Karina's father, but he didn't seem to have a clue about what to do.

Gav loved being with Karina, but today she was fussier than usual. Gav enjoyed volunteering to help, she had een around small children for a while before she became a newsie. She used to live with her aunt for long periods of time at the orphanage her aunt worked at and where Gav was expected to help. From there, Gav had learned basic skills in dealing with children.

Glancing at SS, Gav shifter the baby in her arms. "Shhhh," Gav tried to soothe. "It's okay." Gav said quietly and sighed realizing she was getting no where.

Mush sat down at the edge of a bunk and ran his hands through his hair. They were the only ones in the LH, but it seemed like the baby would be loud enough for the newsies at Tibby's to hear.

Gav bounced the Karina in her arms. "C'mon kid," She whispered.

The baby stopped screaming briefly and Gav froze, holding her breath. Almost immediately, the baby started again.

Mush looked anxiously at his daughter. He then looked over at SS and sighed. "We oughta wake `er up."

Gav shrugged. "She's pretty tired." Gav glanced at Karina and nodded at Mush. "You're right." Gav handed Karina to him, and she kneeled next to the bunk SS was asleep on. She shook her lightly, and whispered that the baby wouldn't stop.

SS yawned and sat up. She reached her arms out and Mush came over and placed Karina in her arms. "Oh my god," SS said, quickly.

"What?" Mush asked quickly.

"She's boinin' up." SS said, he hand grazing the infant's face. SS was suddenly wide awake.

Mush put the back of his hand to the baby's cheek. "Whadda we do?"

SS shook her head, and held Karina closely. "I don't know."
