Life without her brother should have been normal to Nuala. She had spent years beyond measure without his presence, and while there had always been a lingering sadness, she never felt so broken as now. Perhaps she had always clung to the small measure of hope that he would return one day, and everything would be wonderful as it once was. They could walk through the forests and cherish their bond. They would hold each other at night, and she would feel safe again. Or maybe she merely had grown used to the numb feeling of being alone.
Nauda walking back into her life had taken away that cold feeling of loneliness. All of the suffering that she had born melted away leaving her with only joy. Of course such happiness was as fleeting as her brother's apparent sanity. His words were so full of malice that the feel of his hands made her shudder in ways entirely unpleasant. Her hopes were dashed and all she felt was fear.
He had killed their father and then planned to kill the humans. Surely they could not deserve such a fate. Nuala had run, for what else could she do? Her twin would stop at nothing short of death, and that death would leave her still an empty statue as well. While fleeing, she ran into the strange sight of an unusual man.
Abraham was his name, and he had been a blessing. Feeling his hand, touching his soul had been like coming home. Once again Nuala could be a part of another being, and not be awash in darkness. It reminded her of childhood and happiness. Her brother was beyond saving, but she attempted to find some measure of rest with this new man. Man wasn't the correct word to be used to describe him however. Abraham was like no being she had ever seen or touched. His skin wasn't warm to the touch like Nauda's, he was soft in all the wrong places, and kissing him could never compare to the roughness of her brother's lips. He was not her love, not the mirror of her soul.
If this Abraham could not replace her twin, then no one could. She realized this at the last moment. It was probably selfish of her to wait so long to take the proper action, and lives had been lost because of the time it took her. She could have stopped the last elemental from dying… stopped her father's death even… but now was not the time for regret. With one decisive move, Naula made the first real decision in her life. She died.
