He walked through the corridors alone, his backpack bouncing as he did. He passed other students, none of whom paid him much attention. He was used to this, though. No one ever really noticed him, and when they did, it wasn't because they wanted to talk to him. He was used to being alone. It didn't bother him much anymore. He had his camera with him, and he was getting really good at getting the pictures to move.
He saw Ginny across the hall, his face lighting up into a smile. He waved at her, catching her attention. She smiled and waved back, but did not halt her conversation with the friends she was currently talking with. That's okay, he thought, it was probably important. Before he left he took a quick photograph, writing it down in his notebook under, '100393-Gryffindors before class'.
He waits across the hall, trying not to overcrowd the space. A group of Hufflepuffs walk past, and in their midst is Justin Finch-Fletchley. He sees Colin, and his lip tweaks into a small smile as he nods his acknowledgment. The students affected by the Basilisk always acknowledge each other.
It has been almost a year since the attacks. Professor McGonagall said that it might take the other children some time to stop treating him as a victim, but they were still giving him an extra wide berth. It's because I'm weird, he thinks to himself, they don't like me.
He sits by himself at the front of the classroom when their teacher finally arrives. He hears the whisperings of the girls behind him; they're discussing a class the year above them had, a class about bogarts. Colin had read about bogarts, often wondering what his would be if he were to ever face it. Probably a Basilisk, he concedes very quickly.
The class ends and everyone leaves. Colin is the last to pack his bag, and slowly makes his way from the room. Waiting outside is Ginny, her red hair tied back in a plait. She asks him if he wants to hang out with her at lunch, and he agrees, not really sure how to tell her he likes to eat alone.
Her friends look at him a little funny for a moment, then just smile and continue talking when they get there. Colin is not used to people actually wanting to listen to what he has to say, so he doesn't contribute much, and answers questions very quickly. It feels nice to be with other people his age.
Ginny is kind to him because she understands what it's like being weird, she went through the same things he did – only slightly different. Colin knows she doesn't really like spending time with him, though. It's too much effort, and he really doesn't help. Instead he would just be content to being able to get a photo for his collection.
