Just a short piece of fluff that occurred to me one day.

Ensign Throwaway moved quickly through the corridors of the Enterprise. He hadn't been aboard long and he wanted to impress his new boss, the security chief. Of course impressing the captain or the first officer wouldn't hurt either. He was expecting a long career in Star Fleet and as a member of Security he'd learn everything he needed to know about the operations of a starship.

He came to a door and immediately entered the room. It was the legal department for the starship. His boss had told him that all security personnel were required to report to legal before proceeding on an away mission. And he was about to go on his very first away mission ever.

"Ensign Throwaway reports as ordered, sir," he announced to the officer waiting in the room.

"I was informed you'd be coming by," said the lieutenant. "Now, I have all the standard paperwork ready for you. The standard letter to your next of kin, a power of attorney, and, your final will and testament. Oh yes, and you'll need to designate a beneficiary for your life insurance policy."

"This is all standard paperwork for an away team?" Ensign Throwaway questioned.

"That it is," replied the lieutenant. "You never know what might happen on an away mission and Star Fleet wants to be sure all of your affairs are in order. Just in case."

"Oh, okay," said Throwaway. "Guess I'd better get started. My first away mission is in 30 minutes."

After he had finished the paperwork Throwaway left the legal office. The lieutenant took the papers to his clerk and told him to process them. Then he stopped for a moment.

"Oh yeah. Get Ensign Throwaway's file out of the active file and place it in 'Killed In The Line Of Duty' file, would you?"

"Shouldn't we wait until the away mission is over?" questioned the clerk.

"No need," replied the lieutenant. "He's a red shirt going on an away mission."

"Understood, sir," said the clerk as he turned to follow his orders.
