Natsu stared at the chicken. The chicken stared back at him. Why was he staring at a chicken? And a dead one at that.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~Some time before~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
"Yo, Lucy!" said Natsu, raising his hand to greet Lucy as she walked through the front door of her house, back from shopping.
"Natsu, how did you get in?" Lucy asked tiredly. "No, wait, forget I even asked, I don't want to know. I have to cook now, so tell me now, are you going to stay or are you going to eat somewhere else?"
"I wanna stay!" said Natsu with a huge grin.
"Great, then you can help me cut the head and feet off this chicken!" said Lucy, plopping a bag containing a plucked, dead, whole chicken into his hands, along with a knife. "I'm gonna go freshen up, finish by the time I'm done," she told him, walking off to her bathroom.
Natsu stared after her. Sighing, he shook his head and headed towards the kitchen. He took the chicken out of the bag, put it on the counter, and threw the bag away. He then prepared to cut the head of the chicken off, but…wait, was it still alive? The chicken's eyes were open and staring at him. Why was it staring? Natsu stared back at the chicken, the knife in his hand. It was strange, the beady black eyes looked straight into his eyes; it felt as though they were staring into his very soul. A bead of sweat trickled down Natsu's temple. He and the chicken were locked in a pose of two gunslingers, facing each other, about to draw. Except Natsu was holding a knife, and the chicken, nothing.
Stare… Their silent staring contest continued. Natsu felt a pressure that he had never felt before, not even from his greatest enemies. Those eyes, those beady, black, soulless, dead, haunted, empty eyes. Another bead of sweat trickled down his face. His hands were becoming sweatier with each passing second. He felt oddly disgusted, yet fascinated. Natsu chuckled nervously, "I'm not afraid of a chicken," he said aloud, trying to quell the feeling of queasiness welling up in his stomach.
"Natsu, what are you doing?"
Natsu looked behind him at Lucy, tears welling up in his eyes. "I'm sorry! I just can't do it!" he sobbed, pushing the knife into Lucy's hands and running out the door.
Lucy stared. Whatever, she had seen plenty of this kind of thing already. She turned to the chicken and cut the neck and feet off the chicken easily, disposing of the parts in the wastebasket.
