"I can tell the character of a man by the sound of his heartbeat. Usually when I approach I can almost dance to the beat... Strange that yours is so steady."
Then I remember, and I think that perhaps it is not so strange. It – and you – always was steady like that.
We used to lie together contentedly and mostly in silence, I with my head on your chest, listening to the beating of your heart. It would never falter, never fade, and lulled by the rhythm of it I would drift off into sleep.
Just like you, it was always there, comforting and steadfast. Never except in moments of passion would it break its beat and grow faster and faster – I certainly could have danced to it then, if not otherwise occupied. And then when all was done, when we lay back breathless, it would slow and resume its original pace.
Now I wonder, as we play cat and mouse, if your heart has grown as cold as your eyes; if anything, be it fear or love, changes its beat. I wonder if I could make that maddeningly steady heart of yours pound once more.
