Nicolae buried his face in his hands, to terrified to look about him. The horrible voice was still there, though, still hounding him, declaring that he, simple farm boy Nicolae Carpathia, was the anti-Christ. Being only eleven Nicolae hardly knew what the Antichrist was, but he knew enough from his father's bible that it couldn't be good.
"Who are you?" Nicolae asked, practically shouting. He knew that his father wasn't home and that he was miles from any town so no one would hear him.
"I am God." The voice answered back. Nicolae felt shivers run down his spine. God? He thought.
"Yes, God." The voice answered. "You have been chosen to carry out a task for me."
"What task?" Nicolae felt more comfortable now. Before the voice had seemed cold, but now, if he closed his eyes, he could imagine that he was no longer sitting in the family's barn, but inside his home, lying out in front of the fireplace. "You are God, the father the almighty. I will try an do as you ask."
"Good. Nicolae, you are my child. And I have secured a place in heaven for you, for after you complete this task."
"And my taskā¦is to be the Antichrist?" Nicolae asked hesitantly. The voice didn't really give him a yes or no answer, more like a feeling that meant that Nicolae was on the right track. "But what does that mean?" No words answered Nicolae's question. Nicolae instead saw a flash and found himself looking up at a man. All at once he realized that he was looking up at himself, much older and stronger. Older Nicolae was plowing a field during the day and then the scene switched to night and Older Nicolae was studying a book, teaching himself the ways of the political world. Another scene switch and Older Nicolae was standing at a podium, addressing hundreds of people. Then the numbers of people in the audience grew until there were too many to even estimate. Then there was fire, all around fires burning and people screaming. The a sharp pain in his head and everything went black. When Nicolae 'awoke' he felt a horrible heat in his head and a vicious voice was cackling.
"No!" Nicolae shouted and, with that shout, brought himself out of the nightmare.
"Do you understand your task?" God asked him. Nicolae felt that if he said anything but 'yes' he would be doing a crime against God and everything he had been taught.
"Yes, sir." Nicolae nodded. "May I tell anyone?" He asked after a moment. In his mind were his parents and his best friend Neska.
"If you can get anyone to believe that you were given a mission from God to become evil, you may tell them." And with that Nicolae felt the presence leave, and never in his life did he feel more alone.
