Gift
Emmett walked into the living room and quickly spotted Bella by the piano. She sat idly pressing keys as she waited for Edward to return from hunting, a forlorn sigh escaped her lips and rested her chin in her hand as a dreamy faraway expression crossed her face.
Approaching her slowly he cleared his throat; she gasped and spun on the chair, catching herself on the edge of the piano just before she fell off all together.
"Uh hey Bella," he greeted and missed her frown when he failed to look her in the eye.
"Hi Emmett, what's up?" she asked, patting the empty space beside her indicating she wanted him to sit down. He ignored the gesture and continued to stand there, shifting uncomfortably from foot to foot.
"Well you see ah …" he started. Bella's eyebrows rose high into her hairline, she had never in her entire time in Forks seen Emmett Cullen at a loss for words, he normally just came out and said what was on his mind. A lake without shadows as Edward had put it.
"Yes?" she prompted, noticing for the first time that his had his hands clutched behind his back. She didn't know what to make of his bizarre behaviour.
He opened and closed his mouth a few times as if he couldn't quite decide how to say his piece before thrusting his hands out in front of his body. Bella jumped back at the abruptness but when she noticed what was in his hands she gave a cry of delight.
The tiny cream and grey fluffy kitten gave a wide eyed meow and her heart melted.
"Oh Emmett he's beautiful," she cooed, gently lifting the feline out of his hands. If Emmett could have he would have blushed, instead he just brought his hand to the back if his neck and stammered through his explanation.
"I-I bought him for Rose, you know to cheer her up but she didn't want him – something about being afraid of hurting him. So I thought; and I know Edward said you don't have much of a success rate with pets but we will all be here to help that … well do you want him?" the look he gave her was almost pleading and she looked back at the kitten who had curled up in a ball in her hand and gone to sleep.
"I would love him Emmett, thank you," she smiled up at him and his expression lifted to his usual cheery smile.
Edward returned much later that night to find Bella curled up on his bed, the tiny kitten balled up against her chest; he would have to thank Emmett for giving her his gift.
