Starting Over
the day after WTCMB
Jack stood on the beach, watching the waves crash against the sand. He tried to calm himself down, separate his mind from what had happened. Separate his mind from Kate.
He was mad. Mad at Kate for lying to him, for using him to get some dumb toy airplane. Mad at himself for actually believing and trusting her. He didn't know why. She was a criminal, a murderer-the type he hated so much and wanted to be gone from the earth entirely.
Kicking at the sand, his mind took him back to the time they first met. She seemed so innocent and sweet, and thinking that it was all fake broke his heart. Now, he knew who she really was. Maybe it would have been better if he had never known.

Kate picked the last mango and placed it in her full bag. Then, she slid down, about to go back to the beach.
Crack.
A twig snapped a couple meters away. She saw the bushes moving slightly and heard the steady beat of footsteps. Walking towards the noise, she peered around the trees, trying to get a glimpse of who it was.
Jack.
"Hey," Kate said cautiously.
"Hey." His face was blank, completely unreadable.
"Where are you going?"
"Caves," he replied without emotion.
"Want a mango?" Kate offered.
He shook his head. "No thanks."
Kate tried to carry a conversation with Jack, but he answered as dryly as possible.
After a few minutes, she began to grow exasperated.
"Jack, why won't you talk to me?" she blurted out.
"Why won't I talk to you?" Jack took a step closer. "How can I talk to you? Your part of the conversation will be made of lies, anyway."
Kate was shocked. "What? Jack-"
"I don't see why everything that comes out of your mouth is a lie. You lied about why you went on the hunt. You lied about the case and what was inside. And you used me to get to some…some toy! How do you expect me to trust you?"
She was speechless. "Jack…Jack please-"
He just shook his head and continued walking to the caves, his pace quickening.
-
Jack sat on the beach, watching the waves again. He didn't mean for it to have come out like that-but he really didn't know what to think. She could be so helpful, so selfless…(so beautiful, he thought to himself) but maybe that was all part of her act. He didn't know what to believe about her anymore.
Once again, his thoughts were interrupted by Kate.
"Hi," she said softly and sat beside him.
Jack didn't answer, just looked at her for a second. Kate's face was weary and tearstained, her hair uncombed.
"Jack…" she started. "A few days after we crashed, you said we could all have a new life. A chance to start over."
Jack nodded slowly, taking a sip from the water bottle in his hands.
"I want to start over."
He looked into his eyes, reading them. "That means no more lies, Kate."
She returned his gaze. "I know."
He turned back to the ocean. "You don't need my permission to start over, Kate."
She scooted closer. "But I want your approval. I don't want you to hate me, Jack…Please," she whispered.
Jack touched her neck softly, scooting closer. "I don't."
He brushed his lips against hers tenderly, and though it lasted not more than a few seconds, it was all that she needed to know that it was okay.
"I don't."
