She looks so good in that white dress
At the far end of the aisle
Standing where I should be standing
Nathan sat silently at the back of the church as he saw walking down the church floor. She was stunning to say at least. But then again his Haley never failed to take his breath away.
`No, not his, not anymore`.
He briefly glanced at her soon to be husband. He could not help it, but it looked so wrong. He was the one who should be standing there and look at his future with love in his eyes, and the love in her eyes would be shining back at him.
They would give their vows, and secure their future with a passionate kiss. They would make a family, create a home, a happy one.
He could not look at their happy faces anymore, not when he was hurting so much, surely somebody from the church could feel his pain. It was consuming him so much, it made him dizzy.
He cursed himself for coming here. He shouldn't have. He should have stayed home, alone. It is so funny how you don't know what you got until you don't have it anymore. How could he be so stupid to let her slip away from him? He should have fought more for her, he should have noticed her pain, but he didn't. All he could see was his own misery, never stopped to look at her, really look at her, until it was too late.
He didn't deserve her, he wasn't worthy of her love, he knew that, he knows it now. But still when it came to her love, he was selfish, greedy, made him want to keep her all to himself and hide her from the rest of the world. That's what her love did to him. He couldn't, wouldn't live without it.
But now as he glanced at her in her beautiful white dress, he knew he would lose her forever. Tonight she would give herself to another man completely, whatever last claim he had over her, she would distinguish by letting another man take over. The thought alone was something he couldn't fathom.
He remembered overhearing her and Brooke at the wedding rehearsal, he remembered how happy he was to know that he still was the only one she had been with.
For a little longer he could pretend, pretend that she was still his.
Now that he was witnessing her giving herself away to another man, he knew that he had to let go. She was happy, he had to for her sake. No one can take their shared past away from them. He was still her first, but he wanted so desperately to be her last too.
Nothing had ever hurt him so much as the sight of his true love slipping away from him forever. He stares at her, and only her, everyone else has faded into the background. Its only him and her now, between them the long church floor.
As if she feels him, she slightly turns her head, and their eyes lock for a brief second, before she looks away to say her vows. For Nathan the brief exchange felt like an eternity.
Not his, not anymore.
He stops listening, he couldn't even look at her anymore, look at them. Suddenly his shoes were so much more fascinating to him. He barely registered a ruffle and scuffle in the church, and before he even had the chance to look up he feels a hand on his shoulder.
Her.
Standing in front of him, with tears in her eyes, `always and forever` escaping her lips. All eyes were on them now, as he tried to make sense of the situation.
She came back, back to him.
Always and forever, that is what they promised each other.
She kept her promise. As he rose from his seat, he never took his eyes away from hers, and he knew.
His, always his, always and forever.
