The Entrance to the Gryffindor Common Room hadn't always been password guarded.

In fact, Godric Gryffindor had considered passwords to be a far too common and boring way for somebody from his house to enter his Common Room and, considering Godric's notoriously poor memory; he never thought passwords to be the best idea.

To prove his bravery and the bravery of the children in his house, Godric prominently displayed the entrance to the Gryffindor Common Room but had an enchanted statue of a dragon to stand guard over the hole.

For Gryffindor students to get into their Common Room one in a group would be selected to either distract or battle the dragon in order for their friends to gain entrance. The fighter themselves would have to use reckless daring or continue the fight until one or the other was defeated.

Rowena struggled tirelessly to convince Godric to change his method of entrance, as both the students and the castle were suffering daily from massive damage caused by the dragon, though she had to admit, she did admire his creativity.

Helga threatened to convince the house elves to stop feeding him if he kept allowing students to get hurt.

But Godric remained obstinate.

There was only one option left.

After pestering Salazar for months, Rowena and Helga finally managed to convince him to agree to speak to Godric.

Since the men were both as stubborn and obnoxious as each other, the women knew that Salazar would be the only one who stood a fighting chance at convincing Godric that his idea, although creative and often entertaining, was incredibly irresponsible and childish.

Rowena and Helga thought that Salazar would, at least, attempt a civilised conversation with Godric, but that was until Salazar smugly used parseltongue to order the dragon, ancestor to snakes, to fly away and never return.

Needless to say Godric sulked for weeks over the loss of his dragon; he refused to speak to any of the other Founders, much to Salazar's amusement and Rowena and Helga's chagrin.

Fortunately for three of the four Founders, Godric never remained angry for too long.

The dragon never returned to Hogwarts, though there are still reported sightings of the great stone dragon being spotted in the sky to this very day.
