Second best always second best, like in the bible story of Jacob and Rachel. No one ever mentioned his second wife Leah, the only description was she had "weak eyes." They all seemed to forget she was the first wife, having to pay her sister with mandrakes, to spend a night with her husband.
With the slight difference that there was no Rachel, there was a Renesmee Cullen. And Leah Clearwater unlike her namesake was not fertile, and she certainly didn't have weak eyes she had eyes that burned with bitterness, because this Leah was the barren one, barren and also second best, yeah she was aware how much her life sucked.
There was no Ruben, for the lord had not seen her affliction.
There was no Simeon, for the lord had not heard she was unloved.
There was no Levi, for her husband to become attached to her.
There was no Judah to praise the Lord for, no Issachar, no Zebulon, and there certainly was no Dina. She was alone, trying to mend her broken heart in the face of so much rejection.
There was only a love that turned her bitter, a man who she hated and loved so intensely. It at came with the name apparently. Loving a man who the only thing she shared with him was a bed every once and a while, in dark corners, hidden signals and never ending silence, when their trysts were over.
And Leah tended not to forget, that no one would ever work for fourteen years for the right to marry her.
