"Hey Captain," Monk asked, "are you okay"
"I am," the captain said, "I just feel like I'm a bad friend to you lately"
"What? You're not a bad friend. You're an amazing friend"
"You may think so," Stottlemyer said, "but I'm really not"
"No Leland," Monk called out, "you really are"
"I've made some decisions in my life that I thought were the right ones at the time. I don't know why I made the decisions I did but sometimes I wonder if they were the right ones to make"
"Leland, you did what you thought was right"
Monk knew what he was referring to. After the bomb had gone off Trudy was in the hospital for 12 days. She was in agonizing pain and it hurt to even breathe. When it was clear she wasn't going to get better Leland took matters into his own hands and suffocated her with a pillow to put her out of pain.
When Monk found out what had happened he was angry and at the same time he was grateful. The doctors and nurses told him there was no way she was going to recover. He couldn't stand to see her in pain, just like Leland couldn't stand to see her in pain. Leland had the courage to do the right thing even though it hurt.
"It's been 8 years," Monk said, "why is this on your mind now"
"Because now I have what you don't have"
"Huh," Monk asked, "and I repeat huh"
"My new girlfriend TK"
"Right?"
"Her name is the same name that your wife had"
"So what," Monk asked, "and I repeat so what. How does that make you a bad friend"
"Because I have what you don't have"
Monk thought for a second and picked up a red cup
"This," he sad, "is a cup"
Leland laughed.
"Boy Monk nothing gets through you does it"
"This is a red cup"
"Do I look like I'm in nursery school," Leland laughed
Monk ignored that comment and picked up a blue cup
"This is a blue cup"
"I know"
"So if you have a blue cup and I don't have a red cup does that mean that you have what I don't have"
"Well but I still have a cup"
"Yes. You have a blue cup. I had a red cup. You having a blue cup doesn't take away from the fact that I had a red cup"
Leland smiled at his friend
"You know something," he said
"I know a lot"
"You are an incredible friend"
The two friends exchanged a hug.
