He was running. He wasn't sure why. Maybe he was running from the pain of his past. Maybe he was running to the hope he had for the future. He's always felt like there was something more for him in this bland life he was used to.
He would wake up every day and see the once red tally mark on his arm was a darker shade of red than when he fell asleep. Then one day, He woke up and the tally was completely black. That was the day he left. He refused to stay in a house with a woman who no longer loved him. She was his high school sweetheart. But, being with her never felt right, like he was betraying some unknown woman just by being in the same room as the woman he'd grown to love.
Then one day something changed. His girlfriend became distant, almost resentful in the looks she gave him. And then the tally mark started getting darker. The day it became black he packed up his every possession and left. He threw everything he owned in his car and set out for the journey that would change his life.
He spent months searching for something. He had no clue what it was. All he knew was that there was something waiting for him and he was determined to find out what. Then he found it. He was driving through a small town in Missouri; he'd been driving for almost fourteen hours and was exhausted. He found a small cafe off to the side of the road. It looked promising with a sign like said "Best coffee in the county." He decided it would be a good place to stop before finding a motel to stay in for the night.
As he was walking in he felt as though something was pulling on his chest, guiding him into the little building. He walked faster, so fast he was practically running. This was what he had been waiting for. He was seconds away from finding out what had been nagging at him for his entire life. Then he saw her. She was a tiny little thing, maybe only 5'4, with black hair and eyes that shined like the sun. She was staring at him and smiling so big it almost took up her entire face. She then danced over to him so gracefully he was sure she was a angel.
"You sure kept me waiting long enough." She said, with a smirk, like she knew he had been looking for her.
He then looked down at his wrist and there, right next to the black tally mark was the brightest red mark he'd ever seen. It was then he knew. This was where he was supposed to be. This was home.
