A/N: I don't own NCIS, as much as I wish I did.
Feedback is appreciated. This is probably going to be a very short oneshot.
The squad room was quiet for once in the entire time she'd been at NCIS. Ziva sat with a half-smile on her face, surveying her surroundings. The boss had taken his leave early in the day, Tony soon following - "There's no case, Ziva, loosen up!" - and eventually McGee as well. That left her, sitting at her desk, smiling fondly at her surroundings. It was home, and nothing but.
A quick, shrill beep that announced the elevator startled her out of the trance. Who would come back into the building at midnight?
Slivers of light revealed glowing green eyes that looked so familiar. Tony. He was there, hands on his hips with a tired smile.
"Hey, Zi," he almost whispered, his feet making no sound as he stepped over to her. By the movements he was making, she was sure he had something.
She nodded to him and gave a rare smile. "Yes?"
"Got somethin' for ya," he announced triumphantly.
Her heart skipped a beat. A replacement necklace, perhaps? She hadn't bothered to replace the Star of David necklace yet.
"I think you'll like it. It's really nice. I mean, really." Without another word, he lifted a floppy puppy onto her desk.
Its brown eyes held the triumph and childish humour that Tony's did. Its fur was brown, black and white - she absentmindedly determined it to be a german shepherd - with floppy ears. "Tony, is this for me?"
"Of course, Ziva. I wouldn't go early and spend lots of money on a puppy for you for nothing."
"He looks just like you," she laughed, "Can I call him Tony?"
"You're… going to name a puppy after me."
"Sure! You two are so alike. I mean, look at him."
Tony laughed. He stood up, reached over to ruffle her hair, kissed the top of her head gently and left the main desk area. As he took his leave, he looked back at her smiling face. It was worth it. All of it.
"Well, it's just you and me, Tony Junior," Ziva announced, ruffling the puppy's fur. Only then did a note on her desk catch her eye. She opened it hastily. The handwriting automatically told her human Tony had written it.
Hey Ziva,
I didn't mean to get him, I swear. But he looked so sweet, and his brown eyes reminded me of you. Besides, I couldn't keep him, and you need a companion, don't you? Ask McGee, he gets on great with Jethro. I hope you enjoy his company.
Look around his neck.
Carefully, she lifted the puppy's head to inspect its neck. A sparkling silver chain held a Star of David necklace at the end, with another small note in the shape of a heart attached.
Ziva,
Either you read my note or you looked at the puppy.
-Tony
