This is an award fic for my trancey inspiration, who won a contest over at my Kataang100 theme fics. Her request was some fluffy Kataang in Ba Sing Se. And what is the most romantic place in Ba Sing Se? Our dear friend Zuko knows firsthand…
Here you go, trancey! Hope you like it :)
She was sure she would've tripped and fallen at least a dozen times if Aang didn't have such a firm hold on her arm as they sped through the dark streets. The laugh was blown out of her mouth by the air rushing past as they continued running at an unbelievable pace.
"Aang, where are we going?" she asked as he pulled her along.
He turned his head to grin at her briefly. "You have to see it, Katara! I can't believe I found it. You're going to love it! It's the most amazing thing…"
"I'll take your word for it, then," she laughed, and he sped up, making sharp turns left and right that almost spun her into walls if he hadn't gripped her elbow tighter.
Then suddenly, he stopped short, causing her to lurch forward slightly. Aang let go of her arm and gestured grandly to the courtyard in front of them, smile growing ever wider as he watched her face.
It was breathtaking. Hundreds of tiny lights flickered, dancing across stone and making the water sparkle. The fountain lit the whole courtyard in earthy shades of gray, green, and the bright yellow light of the candle flames. A warm breeze passed through, making the lights twinkle over the spray of the water, mimicking the stars in the midnight sky above their heads.
"How…how did you find this place?" she managed to whisper. She felt like saying anything louder would ruin the moment.
"I guess I was just in the right place at the right time," Aang laughed, a tinkling sound that embodied the dancing candles. She pulled her eyes away from the fountain to look at him, and saw herself reflected in his eyes with the candlelight. Lightly, she laced her fingers with his.
"It's beautiful."
She was not looking at the fountain.
"It is."
Neither was he.
Aang smiled her favorite smile, in which one corner of his mouth turned up and his eyes sparkled in the sweetest way. "Katara, I'm feeling kind of romantic right now."
She laughed as her free hand slid up his arm, coming to rest at his shoulder. "Well," she teased, "You know what they say. 'Love is brightest in the dark.'"
"True." The hand not holding hers lightly cupped her chin, tilting her head towards his. "But a little candlelight never hurt, either."
The breeze picked up, scattering the lights across the courtyard in a magical scene. But the couple was too engrossed to notice.
