Author's Note: I'm sorry for being gone so long. I missed you all. I've been going through writer's block. If this first chapter goes well, I'll continue this. This takes place three years before Pretend

Mr. Jiu's truck drove across the dirt road to his home. His young daughter and only child, Colette looked out the backseat window. Her mother's car turned around the corner. This would be the last time Colette saw her.

The truck stopped. Colette and her dad dragged her suitcases to the door. Mr. Jiu unlocked the door, his shoulders drooping.

Colette was about to head up to her room when her dad stopped her. " Colette-"

"It's Coco." Coco was Colette's mother's nickname for her and it's what she went by for a while.

"Coco, there's something you need to hear." Mr. Jiu sighed. "Your mother and I are divorced."

Colette tilted her head, her mouth agape. "What?"

"We're not married anymore. '' Mr. Jiu said slowly. " And this means that you'll have to live with me or her."

"I'm already here." Colette still didn't understand. Everything flew past her head. But she didn't ask for clarification, as if she subconsciously knew nothing her dad said would help her make sense.

A few days later, Mr. Jiu drew a bath for Colette who was reading her favorite book while sitting on the edge of the tub. She kicked her feet back and forth, the water splashing against her legs and the edge of her dress.

Colette flipped the page- and lost her grip. But the book didn't get soaked. The water drifted away from up out of the bathtub and into the air. It circled above Colette and her father. It didn't drip at all. Colette retrieved her book and hopped out. With a wave of her hand, all the water plummeted down to the bathtub.

Mr. Jiu rubbed his eyes, not sure if he was dreaming or not.
