I tried; really, I did. I had tried desperately to be interested in this dress shopping escapade, but I just couldn't make myself have fun. I sighed longingly, wishing time would speed by so I could get to the date I had with James later. But I still had a good four hours until then. And those four hours would be spent sitting on an expensive seat that was incredibly uncomfortable, watching Petunia model wedding dressed for my ecstatic mum and Tuney's ridiculous friends.
"How about this?" Petunia's voice floated over the barrier between us and the changing room a moment before she stepped out in the most hideous piece of clothing I had ever laid eyes on. The bodice was lace with gaudy beads that looked as though someone had just thrown them at it and sewn them on where ever they hit first. The skirt was frighteningly puffy and made entirely of tulle and feathers. To add to it all, the veil that she wore had feathers on the top and a little halo sticking up off a wire.
I winced. It was painfully revolting.
"What do you all think?" Petunia asked, twirling slowly and striking what I'm sure she thought was a very attractive pose. I, however, mentally noted that it made her look even more like a demented duck. Or maybe a goose – she did have quite a neck on her.
"It's gorgeous," gushed one of her bleached blonde, plastic Barbie friends.
"You look amazing," mum said, tears in her eyes. I had to resist the urge to gag.
"You should buy that one," said another friend, eyeing the dress with jealousy. This too made me gag.
"Lily, what do you think?" mum asked as she turned to look at me. I noticed Tuney shoot a glare at me and swallowed the painful lump in my throat.
"That looks so good on you," I said in my best gushing voice. I know that it wouldn't have convinced me, but it appeased mum, the Barbies, and Tuney, who stopped glaring long enough to look surprised and almost pleased. I was almost happy in that moment – generally, I wasn't a fan of lying, but this was definitely an exception. It made Tuney happy, and maybe I'd be on her good side for the first time since before I got my letter to Hogwarts. Perhaps lying wasn't as big a deal as I made it to be, and Sirius was right about it being no big deal.
"We should buy it now," mum said, clapping excitedly.
Then again, perhaps I spoke too soon.
