Not So Ugly

She was ugly. Her hair was too pink, her eyes too green, her forehead too wide, her nose too pointy. Her clothes were too plain, her sandals too big. She was loud -- if she was around, there was sure to be a constant stream of inane chatter (which annoyed him to no end) and she laughed mockingly when she or Naruto beat him up (not that he'd admit it.) She was frustrating; he never knew what to say around her without her constantly giving him death threats in the guise of her fists.

"Sai, wait up!"
Sakura's voice reached his ears and he stopped and turned around to see the girl running up to him, waving something that looked like one of his scrolls. Grunting, he snatched it from her, the words 'go away, Ugly' on his lips. But after taking in her sweat-soaked body, heaving chest, and panting breaths, Sai gave her a curt thank-you instead.
And she smiled at him.
Not her fake, empty smile, the one she gave him everyday, but a genuine smile that reached her eyes.
"You're welcome."

She was beautiful. She was full of emotion, ranging from deceptively sweet to full-blown anger. She was strong, freakishly so, that the ground exploded with a misplaced chakra-enhanced kick. She was dangerous, those very hands used to bring back life were capable of stopping a shinobi's heart. She praised his art, took genuine interest in his work. But most of all, she was his precious person, and he would protect her (and Naruto too, who could forget him?) to the end.

End.
