DISCLAIMER: I don't own Darker than Black.
I'm really sorry for neglecting my account for so long, but university has been keeping me busy. Mid-terms are coming up and I'm so far behind... To quote Gir: "Yay, we're DOOMED!" I'll update my chaptered fics when I can, so please be patient.
Why did you have to kill one of the coolest characters in the show in the first episode?! Why, Hei, why?! (A)
Tanya hummed softly, twirling strands of hair around a finger absentmindedly. Snow crunched under her boots as she walked, creating a steady rhythm. Brightly decorated storefronts formed an indistinct blur on her right, the white noise of the city hummed at the outer edges of her thoughts. She stared straight ahead, concentrating on none of this; rather, she had only one person on her mind.
Nika...with his mischievous smiles and pranks, Tanya would never have guessed that he was capable of such a heart-felt confession. He had been so out of character when he had asked to speak with her that afternoon, rushing to collect her jacket and opening the door for her like a proper gentleman. Nika's face had turned so red that his freckles had almost vanished completely. Tanya covered a giggle with a gloved hand. Nika was a rough-and-tumble guy, but she trusted his promise to take care of her. Even finding out that Suou had been (spying) eavesdropping on their meeting hadn't put a damper on her mood. Speaking of which, she would have to ask Suou for copies of those pictures that she had sneaked.
Tanya came to a halt in a small clearing near the school. Nika wasn't there, but that was to be expected. She was a little early. She checked her cellphone: she was a full hour and a half early. Tanya laughed quietly, tucking her cell into her coat pocket. She had been so worried about being late, worrying that Nika would get fed up and leave. She had scrambled to get ready, even setting her alarm to go off an hour earlier. Still, she didn't mind being early. It wasn't that cold out and it was an unusually clear day out. She could see the imprints of the stars, just beginning to fade.
Tanya frowned, peering at the sky. The stars, gradually waning, had almost completely disappeared—save one. A star, just off to the right, had begun to glow brightly. It was rapidly growing in intensity, emitting a cold blue light. It looked like the star was getting closer. Tanya gasped. She raised her arms, shielding her face.

Tanya woke up slowly, the world slowly coming into focus. She sat up, looking about her. She was sitting in the small clearing; nothing had changed. She looked up. The sky was calm again, hints of sunlight dying the sky. Tanya got to her feet, methodically straightening her clothes and dusting herself off. A dull humming buzzed in her ears: the sounds of insects rudely awakened from their hibernation. She raised a gloved hand, concentrating on the buzzing. Insects, large and black, streamed out of their nests, circling her slim body. Tanya directed the insects in patterns, swirling and dipping, dismissing them once she was satisfied. She paused, considering what she had just done. She had heard rumours of beings named Contractors; beings that possessed fearful powers. These mystical beings supposedly were forced to pay a price for these powers. Tanya and her friends had spent hours debating what these powers might be: money, your soul?
A sharp pain drew her attention to her hand. Thick strands of yellow hair lay in her palm, ripped out savagely from her head. Tanya supposed that she should be concerned about this, hours of styling and experimenting on a perfect hairstyle wasted in seconds. She dropped the chunks of hair onto the ground, walking away from the clearing.
What had she been doing there in the first place? It had been a waste of time; she didn't even want that boy's children.
