She couldn't bear to leave her to that fate. She was but a child, and Narcissa Malfoy couldn't bear to leave her own niece to that fate. That's why acted as she did. That's why she stole, not kidnapped, her niece and sent her away. She left her in the care of the blood traitor Sirius Black.
Sirius, Narcissa had written, this is my niece, Aurora, and she is to be condemned to a terrible fate. The details of that fate are in the papers I have sent you separately regarding and information I deemed necessary for you to know. I leave her in your care, despite the filthy traitor you are. I hope you understand I in no way contacted you and you kidnapped this child of your own accord. Protect her.
Despite the fact that Narcissa had not signed the letters or any of the mentioned papers, Sirius knew that she had sent them. He also knew that he was going to listen to Narcissa and raise Aurora as his own. He only confided all this information in his closest friends: Lily and James Potter, as well as Remus Lupin. He could not have hidden it from James and Lily, as he lived with them, nor would he have wanted to, as he and James were best friends. Now, if anything were to happen to the three of them, he had to have someone that could take care of her and raise her. He entrusted Remus Lupin to hold onto the papers and named him Godfather of Aurora.
