After going through some of my old work, I decided this drabble needed a bit of work, and I started developing a collection. So here it is, a collection of drabbles, one shots and songfics about Tobias, the war, and his relationships with the Animorphs, Rachel in particular. I do not own the Animorphs, or anything else you might recognize.
Chapter One
Something Worth Fighting For
Tobias had never thought highly of himself. He was just a nobody, he knew that. His family, or what little of it, had made sure that he knew that. He was quiet and shy, and he thought on a different level from everybody else, and other guys didn't like that. They harassed him, bullied him. They made sure he knew he wasn't anybody special, and that nobody would care, nobody would miss him. All his life he'd be shuttled back and forth between his uncle over here and his aunt over there. His uncle was always drunk and physically abused him and his aunt used him as her own personal slave, and verbally degraded him. He knew they hadn't really cared, he knew they wouldn't miss him if he just one day disappeared. He didn't think he was important, as he had been raised his whole life think he was an unimportant nuisance. So no matter what was thrown at him, he never fought back because he didn't believe he was worth fighting for.
He was back at his uncle's house, he doesn't know how long he is going to be there for. Could be weeks, maybe months. Highly unlikely he'd make it the full school year, but he goes to the local junior high anyway, a boy need his education. He's only been there for a week when the bullying starts, it is the same guys from elementary school. Andy and Tap-Tap. They intentionally embarrass him in class, and corner him when he is alone. It was one of those times when he is cornered alone that she came. She happened to be walking by just as they started laying into him. He knew exactly who she was, Rachel Berenson. A pretty, no scratch that, gorgeous and popular girl. She asked them what they were doing, and called them pathetic. They weren't going to drop it but she looked serious, she would hurt them if she had to. So they left, because even if they weren't afraid of what she would do, they were afraid of what her cousin Jake would do if they dared hit her back. She came up to him, her face obviously concerned for him. This surprised Tobias, no one had ever looked concerned. Are you okay? She'd asked and he'd nodded. You really shouldn't let them to that to you, you need to start defending yourself. And then as quickly as she had arrived, she was gone.
He'd tried after that, to defend himself more. But he'd never been much of a fighter. And you can never be much of anything if you don't believe in something. And so he was practically helpless when Andy and Tap-Tap gave him that swirly, something that had been a regular occurrence in his Elementary life. But this time it was longer, and he thought he might just drown. And then Jake Berenson came, told the guys to back off, and saved him. They're idiots, you shouldn't have to put up with them. Jake had said. Tobias nodded, and thanked him. And thought, that just maybe, he'd found some friends in the Berenson cousins. So he hung around with Jake, going to the mall after school and playing video games. He could tell that Jake's best friend Marco didn't really like him, or perhaps he was jealous that Tobias could actually beat him at video games. Jake made him feel welcome though.
That night in the abandoned construction site would become the best night of his life. Well the best night a fourteen year old with practically no life but a hell could have. He was given a job, he had to protect earth. Even though not many humans had been particularly nice to him, he knew it was his duty. Because Elfangor had entrusted him with it. Tobias, the shy blonde kid with the dreamy eyes who had never defended himself, hated it when others made the effort, because he didn't think he was worthy, had finally found that something worthwhile. He had found something that would make him worthwhile.
Tobias knew that this, this was something worth fighting for.
