Author's Notes: This is just the prologue – a dream sequence/flashback from when the main character (whose name you will find out later) was very young. The angels and demons are supposedly waging war on each other… when in reality the angels are simply massacring their counterparts because they are impure, and they desire to destroy all that is not as good and holy as they are. The demons are nearly wiped out in this battle after being lured into a trap, and the main character, only a child at the time, is discovered after the initial battle by the angels.. very grim POV intro. My mother said it made her want to jump off a cliff (personally, I didn't think it was that bad).

Shadows of the Radiance

Around me, fires rage in uncontrolled fury as brilliant flashes of light illuminate the gray and overcast skies above a barren battlefield. Where only hours before the air was filled with the clash of steel and the screams of the dying, there is nothing but an eerie calm. I fall to my knees, unable to stand any longer, trembling with fear as they form a circle around me. Five angels leer above me, shining with celestial brilliance. Their fair faces are twisted in expressions of hatred and contempt. Blood streams down my sides where their blades have cut me. They don't seem content to let me die quickly…

The brightest of the angels steps foreword, and I cower as he approaches. I am surrounded on all sides, defenseless… and so frightened I cannot even speak. I want to beg him to stop, to leave me be, but even if I could find the voice I know it would fall upon deaf ears. My wings have been broken and torn so that I cannot fly away. There is no escape for me now.

His silvery eyes show neither compassion nor pity, only a cold hatred. I know he feels no remorse, for he is an angel, the purest of all beings, and I, a demon, am nothing to him. Nothing but a creature whose very existence is an affront to his. A creature of evil that must be destroyed.

His shining blade drives into my chest and I scream as agony rips through my body. The holy sword flares with an angry brilliance and the angel smiles in satisfaction as he drives the blade deeper, twisting it to the side. The pain becomes too much for me to bear as my consciousness beings to fade.

I am alone, lost within a sea of light, dying, confused… and all I can feel is pain.
