Prologue

I turned away from the stove, careful to make sure that the pasta was boiling on low flame.

The phone trilled on, as impatient as its caller and I was irritated because I couldn't get to it fast enough. Nearly knocking the chair over, I stumbled towards the phone and finally snatched it up it up.

"Hello" I said a little breathlessly

"Bella? Its-its Charlie" My father's voice shook with grief and shock.

"Dad! What's wrong? What's happened?" I asked, getting scared. Charlie hardly ever broke down.

"Bells…I don't know how to tell you. There was a …acc-accident. On the main road from La Push. There was very little visibility and the road was very slippery. The car…it veered off the road and-, "He, broke off into sobs." And it-it crashed into a tree. The dr-driver…he didn't stand a chance. His-his head smashed through the –the windshield."Again he broke off into sobs.

I didn't know why he was telling me this but Charlie was never so upset for even things like this. He was chief of police and it was part of his job to deal with sad, scary things. No, this was something personal.

Even though I was scared and curious, I had to know." Who was the driver Dad?" my voice was much stronger than how I felt.

"J-Jacob"
