"Who killed Dr Temperance Brennan, brilliant forensic anthropologist and bestselling author?" was the first thing Booth saw when he opened the newspaper that morning at his desk, he choked on his bagel and reached for his phone and hit speed dial, the call went straight to voicemail.
"Dammit Bones!" he grabbed his car keys and ran out of the building.
Booth drove to Bones' apartment and when he got to her front door he found that it was unlocked and ajar.
"Bones?" he called as he entered, only to find her father sitting at the kitchen table with the same newspaper Booth had that morning. He didn't know what to say, he just sat next to Max at the table.
"Have you heard anything?" Max asked him
"No I didn't even read the article, the headline was too much for me, do you… she didn't even tell me she was going anywhere" Booth managed to say.
"It says that human remains were found dismembered and put in numerous copies of Tempe's books" Max told him, referring to the newspaper article he held in his hands.
"oh my God, no it cant be Bones, I just saw her Friday" Booth knew that was more than enough time to dismember a body, he didn't want to think about the fact that it could be the woman he loved.
"What makes them think it was Bones?" Booth asked, he was almost in tears.
"They found one of Tempe's necklaces at the scene" Max told him, showing him a photo in the newspaper.
"I gave her that…but they could've stolen it from Bones, have they analysed DNA samples yet?"
"I think you better get to the Jeffersonian son, the remains have been sent there". Booth thanked Max and headed to the Jeffersonian.
Once there he headed towards the forensic platform where Angela, Hodgins and Cam were already, Dr Sweets was standing nearby, he offered Booth condolences but Booth brushed them off and kept on walking. Life seemed to move very slowly at that moment and Booth didn't really pay attention to anything but the dismembered remains layed out infront of him. He walked straight over to the table of personal effects found at the scene and against the warnings of Cam he picked up the necklace that he had given to Bones for her last birthday.
Cam stood behind him and placed a reassuring hand on his shoulder.
"I bought her this last year for her birthday; she said it was her favourite"
"This person could have one just like it, or it could've been stolen from Dr Brennan" Cam suggested, trying not to put her foot in her mouth like she did often. Booth turned the necklace over in his palm and there, where he had put them, were his initials engraved into the back, he was praying that this necklace wouldn't be the same one.
"It's hers, I engraved my initials there"
"Then its most probably been stolen, don't worry Seeley, we still haven't ID'd the remains" Cam told him, then he was furious.
"Why not, I thought you guys were the best in the country!" he yelled at them, throwing the rolled up newspaper he still had in his hand on the table so it made a loud bang, everyone jumped.
"Theres no head and no flesh on the Bones" Cam interrupted his rant
"and the remains are in very tiny pieces, its going to be hard to put back together" Wendell added, "this is Dr Brennan's domain"
They all stared at the bone fragments layed out on the table infront of them, Angela put her head on Hodgins shoulder and her hand over mouth, trying to hold back more tears.
