Dear Bella,
You told me you were curious about the first day we met. Well, if I'm leaving you with Alice to be tortured for two-and-a-half days to hunt with Carlisle, Emmett, and Jasper, I'm going to give into at least one of your wishes. This is what was running through my head that day…
Sometimes I'm amazed at how selfish humans can be. Listening to their thoughts all day long gave me not only a scientific insight to their subconscious, but a very unwelcome one as well. Listening to them babbling to themselves about a new student at this school was bad enough without listening to people like Jessica Stanley, Mike Newton, and Lauren Mallory.
"One day, she's been here ONE DAY, and she already has all the guys wrapped around her finger. Well, if she gets instant popularity, I'll get the same if I'm her friend."
"Wow, she's pretty. We're perfect for each other really. I mean we both come from the sun, we're both pretty darn good-looking, and it's pretty obvious that she likes me better than these other losers."
"Disgusting. She's not even that pretty. Her hair is so… bland and I swear if I have to hear about how skinny she is when I can freaking see her little 'muffin top' stomach, I'm going to explode!"
How charming. Predictable as humans were, I couldn't help but be thankful for my gift. It offered quite a few laughs between my family and me. It's also gotten us out of a couple of jams.
The bell rang and I walked slowly from the cafeteria towards my next class. Biology. I have mastered high school biology many times and more already. If it wasn't necessary for our cover, I would skip it and find something more interesting to do. Things like watching paint dry, watching grass grow, and throwing myself into a fire found their way onto the list.
While I waited for the class to start, I glanced around the room and saw everyone hunched in groups whispering about the new girl. Again. From what I heard in the room, she was super hot, she was horribly ugly, she was the best athlete, she was extremely clumsy, she had dull hair, she had the prettiest hair in the school, she loved Forks, and she couldn't wait to get away from Forks. Rather mixed-up these humans were. Only seconds later, someone walked in the room. Someone that was most definitely a new student. I smelt her before I saw her. The freesia-and-blood smell hit me like a wave of concrete. I could only stiffen and tighten my hands into fists. This girl, no taller than 5'5", no heavier than 120 pounds, was going to be my downfall. I could tell immediately that she was what the Volturi would call la tua cantante.
"It is her fault for smelling so appallingly appetizing," the monster within me whispered.
"No," I pushed. I grit my teeth and chanted a mantra in my head. I can't kill her, I won't kill her, I can't kill her. Carlisle, Carlisle, Carlisle.
By the end of the class period, I was on the verge of cracking. I fantasized of following her, attacking her, killing her and draining her of her blood. The bell rang, and I shot out the door at a pace too fast to be human. I didn't care; I needed to get out of there. I couldn't be there. She would break everything we had built. We would have to go into hiding from the Volturi as well as the human police.
So when I ran out of there, I had no idea how thankful I would later be. Now, I know that if I had given into the monster, if I had killed that simple human girl, I would have lost my reason to live. I would have lost the only woman in the world who can make me feel… alive. I would have lost you.
I love you, Bella.
