Beauty and the Beast prologue

She was running through the forest at a breakneck pace. She had to get to the gate before they caught up with her. She noticed from the length of the shadows that it was early evening, and she still had a lot of distance to cover.
It was almost sunset when she noticed that she was slowing down. She didn't know why until she looked down. She had a myriad of wounds all over her body, including a long slash that went diagonally across her entire back. She completely forgot about her wounds due to the adrenaline rush she had while fleeing them.
She had completely stopped running, now leaning on a tree for support. All the pain that her brain had been numb was coming back in full force. She looked up and saw the gates to her village, Kohonagakure. So close, yet so far away.
She tried to stand up to start running again, but as she stepped away from the tree she lost her balance and fell. Usually she would be able to easily recover in the air and land on her feet, but with the pain and loss of blood she landed on the ground with a sickening thud.
She used all her remaining strength to get up, but it was futile. She collapsed on the ground and knew that the chance of her surviving was slim to none. Then, as blackness started to envelope her, she heard the sound of footsteps approaching.
